Farm Center comeback stuns MMC
Marshall Medical Center had everything going their way Tuesday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Field at Lewisburg, holding a 6-1 lead over the Farm Center before it slipped away via an 8-6 extra inning comeback win by Chapel Hill.
After the Farm Center scored an unearned in the top of the first inning, MMC (3-4) scored two runs on no hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Hit by pitch
Unfortunately, Gauge Allen was hit in the jaw by a pitch during the inning and had to be taken to Marshall Medical Center by ambulance where the brave warrior was attended to.
After the incident, the Farm Center loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning, but were unable to score as MMC starting pitcher Austin Grubbs fielded two attempted squeeze bunts and threw to home for force plays before getting out of the jam with a strikeout.
Farm Center starting hurler Ethan Mealer had a rough outing, walking six batters, including the first three MMC batters in the home half of the frame.
Colton Barber followed with an RBI single and Caleb Crowell made it 5-1 when he drilled a two-run single, sending Mealer off the mound.
Out in front
An error by the Farm Center made it 6-1 before Dustin Brashear came on to strike out the next two MMC batters and the inning ended when Farm Center catcher Blaize Sweeney picked Crowell off third base.
There was no more scoring until the top of the fifth inning, but it did not come easy for the Farm Center as Dylan Pendley led off the inning with a triple and Brashear followed with a walk.
Jarvis Lyttle stepped in the batter's box and hit a fly ball to center field that looked like would easily score Pendley tagging up, but Grubbs, now playing center field for MMC nailed the speedy Pendley at home.
Undaunted, Mealer and Sweeney followed with back-to-back triples, tying the game at 6-6.
Brashear set down MMC 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and Caleb McElhaney came to the mound for the home team and shut down the Farm Center bats until the eighth inning.
Jaylen Smith led off the eighth inning with a base on balls and Pendley beat out a bunt, putting runners on first and second.
Smith took off for third base with Brashear at the plate and the throw to try to get him out sailed into left field as the go-ahead run crossed home plate, making it 7-6.
Ahead for good
Brashear grounded out to the pitcher, sending Pendley to third and the next two batters walked to load the bases.
Sweeney provided Brashear with an insurance run when he grounded out to shortstop, scoring Pendley.
Brashear finished the game with bang on the mound, striking out the side in order to complete the comeback win for the Farm Center (3-0).
