The Lewisburg Middle School Cross Country team recently competed in the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association Sectional Meet at Sulphur Springs in Smyrna and the first-year squad came away with some valuable learning experiences.

"All four teams finished strong and despite the fact we did not qualify for state, I am quite pleased with how LMS performed," LMS coach Estelle Long said. "We were plagued with a couple of unfortunate issues. In the varsity race, Jessa Lancaster twisted her ankle early on, causing her to finish with a time that was off her average by nearly nine minutes."

Top runner

The squad competed with a varsity and junior varsity team at the meet with Peyton Graves finishing as the top LMS runner in the boys varsity one mile run with a time of 13:33.58, which was good enough for 47 place.

"Peyton Graves has consistently led the boys all season," Long said.

In the girls varsity one mile run, Abbie Collins came across the finish line in 37 place, Yesimar Sanchez was four spots behind Collins and Olivia Ferris finished 47.

"Abbie Collins worked hard and was able to cross first for us," Long said. "And Yesimar Sanchez started strong and consistently came in the front of the pack."

Although just a first-year squad, Long believes the season has progressed well and the sport will continue to grow in Marshall County.

"My runners are getting stronger each week and most of them practice run each week." Long said. "Looking back at where they started in August, they have improved on average by seven minutes. More importantly, I believe the majority of the team has fallen in love with running and will continue to run in the off season."

DeShaun Johnson shows the intensity and determination needed to compete at a high level in the sport of cross country.

The team

The LMS team has 14 runners on the team this season, evenly split between the girls and boys and Long is very happy after putting the team together in a short amount of time this year.

"This year we were rushed to get ready and I am looking forward to next year when we will have the time to properly prepare for the season," Long said. "We have had a great season. Each of the runners experienced success by improving on their times each week. There is a great amount of talent on this team and with the proper amount of time to prepare, I believe we will be even more competitive next season."
