LMS Tigerettes win, Tigers fall vs. Richland
The LMS basketball squads followed the same pattern as the season opener with the Tigerettes winning and the Tigers losing.
The Tigerettes, behind a balanced scoring, attack took down Richland 32-23 with Dionna Crutcher leading the way with 10 points.
LMS trailed 5-4 after a low scoring first quarter, but picked up the pace in the second, taking an 8-7 lead on a Sydney Tidwell bucket with 1:20 to play in the first half.
After one Richland free throw tied the game, Israel Hurt scored on a fast break bucket off a nice pass from Crutcher and that was followed by a steal and score by Karlye Wiser, making it 12-8.
Jesse Jennings, who led all scorers in the contest hit two late free throws for Richland to cut the LMS lead to two points at halftime.
The teams battled neck-and-neck for much of the third quarter before Richland tied the game at 14-14 on a Haven Braden basket with three minutes to go.
With 22 seconds remaining in the period, Jennings scored to give Richland a 19-18 lead, but Crutcher hit a buzzer beater and the Lady Raiders trailed 20-19, entering the fourth quarter.
An Abby McGehee basket opened up the fourth quarter scoring as the Tigerettes maintained a small lead until they pulled away as Crutcher scored four straight points late in the period with her second bucket coming off a pretty pass from Tidwell with 45 seconds left in the contest.
After a Richland missed shot, Hurt knocked down a low post bucket to seal the win for the Tigerettes (2-0) who travel to Spring Hill on Thursday.
The Tigers took the floor for the nightcap and quickly fell behind, trailing 11-4 after the first quarter.
Richland held a 10-point lead twice in the second quarter with the second double digit lead coming at 22-12.
A steal and score by LMS' Lamrion Price was followed by a Kaamil Hazel three-pointer, cutting the Raiders' lead to 22-15 and with four ticks left on the clock, Bryson Hughes knocked in a rebound to make it a five-point game at the half.
The Tigers did not make any headway in the third quarter as Richland held the same seven-point lead heading into the final period.
Didn't give up
LMS tried to fight back several times, but just could not muster up enough offense to make a comeback in the seven-point loss.
The Tigers (0-2) were led in the scoring column By A'ky Howard and Devontae Davis, who had seven points apiece.
Kaamil and Jaamil Hazel had a half dozen points each in the game, while Daniel Nicholson (13) and Logan Helton (12) notched double digits for the Raiders.
