CMS Lady Bulldogs fall to Culleoka in overtime

The Cornersville Middle School girls basketball team went down early before catching back up midway through the contest to taking a commanding lead late in the game, but ultimately lost in overtime in a rollercoaster of a game for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs went up 23-16 in the fourth quarter before falling apart and letting the Warriors force overtime on a Breanna Dickson layup as time expired in regulation.

Cornersville could muster just two points in overtime as leading scorer Lexi Warren fouled out and Culleoka scored five crucial points in the extra period to take home the 31-28 lead.

Patience wanted

"When we have a lead we've got to learn how to slow things down and take good shots," CMS coach Peyton Newton said. "The girls did what they could and played hard and didn't quit."

"We just had some things not go our way but at the end of the day when we have a lead we have to start slowing things down and taking care of the ball."

Exandria Scheetz nailed a free throw and hit a layup to cut an early Culleoka lead to 12-9 before four Abbie Woodard points leveled the game at 14-14 heading into the half.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out on the Warriors in the third quarter with a suffocating full court press that held Culleoka to just two points in the period.

Warriors stay around

CMS looked to be ready to run away with the game before a combination of missed free throws and untimely turnovers allowed the Warriors to hang around before the buzzer tying layup.

The Bulldogs missed five free throws in the final frame of regulation that would have put the game out of reach.

"I thought we played a decent first half offensively but we were bad defensively," Newton explained. "So we turned up the pressure for an early third quarter lead and kind of cruised to the fourth quarter."

"Again, we got that lead but they made some big shots when they needed to," Newton added. "We had some breaks not go our way and let them get back in it and you got what you got."
