Willie J. Mitchell

On Jan. 9, 2017, we lost one of Marshall Counties Most prominent figures, William John Mitchell, known by most as Willie J. Mitchell. Willie J. was the owner and operator of Mitchell Construction for more than 35 years. His working skills took him all over Middle Tn, Alabama, Mississippi and during the 60s it included Illinois.

Willie J. sponsored and coached for more than 40 years for the following: Men's baseball, Men and Women's Softball and Babe Ruth Baseball. He was a fixture equally as much on the football field of Jones Park mentoring and assisting the players and coaches in any capacity; then moving on to Marshall County High School doing the same.

Willie J. was also a solid fixture at the Lewisburg Recreation Center. First, as an avid golfer then jokingly as a "meeter and greeter" on the golf course. He was a referee for high school football for 56 years and was responsible for obtaining 15 or more College Athletic Football Scholarships for the young men of Marshall County.

Willie J. was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Wakefield Mitchell, Son -William Robert Mitchell who was one of the first to play in the NFL from Marshall County, and daughter, Veronica Mitchell Childress former 4th Grade Teacher at McCord and Westhills Schools. He leaves to cherish precious memories two daughters: Jerrie(Eddie) Henry and Denice Curtis. Son-in-law-Jerome Childress;Grandsons: Ryan( Jennifer) Henry, Brent(Romy) Henry, Ahmad Childress, Shawn(Tareai)Curtis, Terry (Katy) Curtis, Kaz (Teara) Curtis, Special Friend -The late Marva Smith, Granddaughters: Rachelle (Michael), Portia (Art) Jones, Mica(Reese) Coleman, Danielle(Julian):23 Great Grandchildren and five Great-Great Grandchildren: Special Nieces Gloria (Arnold) Quarles, Kathey Reynolds, Vivian D. Wakefield; Special Nephews: Reginald (Sandi) Geary and Royce (Mary) Wakefield: Special Cousins: Evelyn (Jose) Guzman.

The arrangements are as follows: Visitation Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017, at The Dottie Kelso Gymnasium beginning from 10-12 Noon. Visitation with the family from 12 -- 1 p.m. Funeral Service will follow at 1 p.m. Interment at Beechwood Cemetery, Cornersville, TN.
