The Veteran for Foreign Affairs held a student essay contest titled the “Voice of Democracy.” There were 11 districts in which all schools were able to enter. Each district picked three winners and ranked them first, second, and third places. Marshall County is in district 5. District 5 represents the following cities: Lewisburg, Winchester, Fayetteville, McMinnville, Manchester, Pulaski, Shelbyville, Mount Eagle, McMinnville, and Tullahoma. Two out of the three winners came from Marshall County High School. Carolyn McCormick won first place and Nathan Thomason won third place. Both students were rewarded with a financial incentive for their achievement in the region. Post Commander Hundley Ford and Susan M. Tonsetic, treasurer for the organization, “Uncommon Heroes” visited Marshall County High School to present the awards in person.

Editor’s note: Tammy Shrivalle is the AP U.S. history teacher at Marshall County High School.
