The mark of a good team is finding a way to win even though not clicking on all cylinders.

The Forrest Lady are a really good team and they showed it Tuesday night at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill, defeating a pesky Spring Hill squad 5-1.

Forrest was coming off a huge weekend where they won the very difficult Middle Tennessee Softball Coaches Association Tournament at Ridley Park in Columbia and it seemed like they had some rust versus the Lady Raiders.

Katlin Leverette bashes her first career homerun with Forrest in the second inning to give the Lady Rockets the lead for good in their 5-1 win over Spring Hill Tuesday.

After a slow start, Forrest went long ball as freshman Katlin Leverette hit her first career homerun, jacking a go-ahead two-homer in the second inning and ace hurler Samantha King followed with a moon shot in the bottom of the third.

Forrest put up 10 hits in the game with Emma Stacey going a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Eighth-grader Laura Mealer went 2-for-2, while Jasmine Runk, Carson Warner, and Zoe Long all had one hit.

Eighth-grade shortstop Laura Mealer guns down a Spring Hill runner in the first inning.

King didn’t have a letdown, picking up the win in the circle, going the distance in the contest as the senior gave up three hits, one earned run, struck out six and walked zero Spring Hill batters in the contest.

“I was confident and really excited to come here and do it and I think everybody just had the confidence to win tonight,” King said. “We went on fishing trip and had fun, so I think that was our cooldown and all that.”

“We went over my grandparents and we caught a bunch of little baby fish, but me and Kayla (Gillespie) almost caught a monster….we did catch the monster.”

Spring Hill got two out of its three hits in the first inning as Alise Maynard led off the game with a base hit to left field.

Shelby Seacrest followed with a single to right and promptly stole second base to put runners on second and third.

Gracy Martin knocked in Maynard with a fielder’s choice RBI before King got the next two Spring Hill batters out to end the inning.

Lady Raider hurler Layla Bennett got out of a bases loaded, two-jam in the bottom of the first inning and King set down Spring Hill 1-2-3 in the top of the second.

After Zoe Long was thrown out on a close play at first base for the first out of the home half of the inning, Bennett got a strikeout for out number two.

Stacey kept the inning alive with a two-out double to left/center field before Leverette went yard, smashing a ball over the right field fence to give King all the run support she would need in the game.

Leverette, a freshman transfer from Community said, “It felt great, I didn’t think it was going over at first so I just started running fast and then it did, so I was happy and it’s all good.”

“I like it here, Forrest is way better than Community, I have great classmates and we have a great softball program and great coaches. I’m really excited to be here and want to win state, because I want a ring.”

King retired the side in order in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and the only other base runner she let on base was via a Martin leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning.

Zoe Long lays down a perfect bunt for a base hit RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning to round out the scoring for Forrest.

King hammered a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning to make it 3-1, Runk knocked in a run in the fourth and Long had an RBI base hit in the fifth inning to round out the scoring for the Lady Rockets (17-1, 4-0).

Forrest traveled to Community yesterday and the Lady Rockets have another tough weekend tournament as they compete in the Brentwood Tournament at Crocket Park.

The Lady Rockets open today versus Franklin at 4 p.m. and take on Brentwood Academy at 5:30 before closing out pool play on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. versus Pope John Paul II.
