“For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that He might be Lord both of the dead and living.” – Romans 14:8,9
As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord there is a great element that is so often over looked. It is the fact that in the great resurrection of Jesus Christ He rose again from the dead to “be Lord.”
The incarnation, the miraculous healings, the feeding of thousands, the casting out of demons, and the unparallel teachings of the New Covenant law of love is beyond the word – awesome! Nevertheless all of that greatness came to a climax at His resurrection. The crowning jewel in Jesus Christ’s ministry is His resurrection whereby He might “be Lord both of the dead and living.” Understand that as the Son of God He was already Lord, but as a man who lived a sinless life He earned the rights to be Lord as well. We could easily say that Jesus Christ is both Lord God and Lord Man, and the resurrection gave Him the rights to be Lord Man or better yet Lord over man. This is an absolute eternal essential when it comes to our salvation. In order to effectually apply His blood righteousness upon us to cleanse us from our sins and to give us a new and eternal life Jesus Christ must rise from the dead as Lord.
An old Indian chief was told about the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus by a missionary, but he said: “The Jesus road is good with great light, but I have followed the old Indian road all my life, and I will follow it to the end.” Years later he was entering the shadow of death. As his eyes were getting dim and the darkness of death a few breaths away, he said to the missionary: “Can I turn to the Jesus road now? My Indian road ends here. The valley is dark, there is no light, and I want to follow the One who is Lord over death.”
All the religions of the world have special days in which they worship their gods. Nevertheless Christianity is unique just for the fact that their God died for them, and He defeated death for them by rising on the third day. Therefore Christians everywhere celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of their God who loved them so much that He gave Himself for them. No other god or leaders in all the religions of the world have such a holy day as Resurrection Sunday.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ demonstrates His deity, His sovereignty and His Lordship over both the dead and living. Jesus Christ alone is the Resurrected Lord!
