The Marshall County Tigerettes notched their fifth straight win in the intra-county rivalry series with Cornersville, beating the Lady Bulldogs 5-2 Thursday night at Frog Bottom.

“It was a huge ballgame, you could tell there was a lot of pride there,” MCHS coach Heather Denton said. “They wanted to win that game and you tell with all the tension in the stands, everybody was in the game and everyone wanted their team to win.”

MCHS hurler Marlee Woodward followed up her perfect game on Tuesday with another outstanding performance in the circle, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.

Marlee Woodward picked up the win in the circle in the Tigerettes’ 5-2 win at Cornersville Thursday night.

Brooklin Conger came on for Woodard in the bottom of the seventh and closed the door to earn the save.

“Our pitchers kept the ball low and let the defense work and that is our philosophy,” Denton said. “In the district, both of them have an ERA less than two, so they are doing their job and we just have to hit the ball when we have runners in soring position.”

Taylor Walls also had two hits and an RBI, while Katherine Donahue and Lexi Cashion drove home one run apiece in the contest for MCHS.

“We were hitting with runners in scoring position, which was huge for us because we haven’t been doing that,” Denton said. “We got ahead and we scored early and when we can score early, we can win.”

Lady Bulldog standout senior Madison Hopkins had two hits and drove home one run on Senior Night at Cornersville.

The Tigerettes scored one run in the first inning as catcher Hannah Davis drew a two-out base on balls and after her courtesy runner Naomi Hopper stole second base, Walls knocked her in with a base hit to center field.

The Lady Bulldogs tied the game in the home half of the inning when catcher Emma Mitchell walked, went to second on a groundout and scored on a base hit by senior Kirsten Young.

The Tigerettes added two runs in the top of the second on a fielder’s choice RBI by Donahue and an infield single by Woodward to make it 3-1.

Woodward set down the Lady Dawgs 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and MCHS tallied an unearned run off Young in the top of the third.

Woodward came up with three straight outs in the home half of the third and Cashion made it 5-1 with a fielder’s choice RBI in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lady Bulldogs got a leadoff double by Hopkins and a two-out single by Mikaela King to put runners on the corners in the bottom of the frame, but Woodward got out of the jam on a groundball to Leah Hollingsworth at shortstop.

King, who had come for Young in the circle in the fourth inning, retired the side in order in the top of the fifth.

Cornersville eighth-grader Abbie Woodard bangs a single to left field in the sixth inning.

Cornersville eighth-grader Abbie Woodard reached on an error to begin the bottom of the inning and went to second on a base hit by senior Alana Braden.

After a pop-out to second base, Woodward walked Hopkins and Young to make it 5-2 before getting out of the jam with a force at home and an inning ending fly ball out to Courtney Edde in right field.

Both squads left two runners stranded on base in the sixth inning and after Marshall County failed to score in the top of the seventh, Conger came to the circle in the bottom of the inning for the Tigerettes.

Marshall County right fielder Courtney Edde hauls in a fly ball to end a fifth inning scoring threat.

Mitchell walked to lead off the inning and Hopkins followed with a single to left field before Conger bore down and retired the next three Cornersville batters to end the game.
