Marshall Medical Center wins third straight
Marshall Medical Center (MMC) jumped on A-Plus Collision Center early in the opening game on Monday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field, taking a 4-0 lead after one inning and then scored at least one run in three out of the next four innings to walk away with a 9-1 victory in six innings.
Despite scoring just one run, A-Plus had several chances to tighten the game up, but left six runners on base with three in scoring position in the eight-run loss.
The A-Plus defense also gave up four errors to just one error committed by MMC.
MMC picked up a dominant performance on the mound from Colton Barber, who finished with a game-high 13 strikeouts with 15 first-pitch strikes over five innings before Blake Aldridge came on in relief for the final inning to rack up two strikeouts.
Zack Graves led Marshall Medical at the plate with two hits and four quality at-bats and Austin Grubbs led the team with two RBI. Barber also tallied two hits and picked up a second inning RBI to push the lead to 5-0.
Grayson Miller took the hill for A-Plus and lasted just three innings after giving up six runs before Carson Cheek came on to finish out the ballgame.
MMC jumped out to a decisive 4-0 in the opening frame behind RBIs from Grubbs and Logan Courtamanche.
Barber started out the game dominant on the hill for MMC, striking out three of the first four APlus hitters.
MMC added to its lead in the second inning as Miller walked Ashton Grubbs with one out and after Aldridge went down swinging for the second out of the frame, Barber stepped up and sent a double to the right field fence allowing Grubbs to touch home and increase the lead to 5-0.
A-Plus started off the second inning on a high note as Blake Moreland and Kaden Allen each picked up a single, but Barber got the next two batters swinging, leaving A-Plus runners on the corners to end the inning.
MMC went back to work in the third inning as Courtamanche produced a one-out single into left field before Connor McVey picked up a walk.
Courtamanche stole third and finally took home plate on a wild pitch from Miller for a 6-0 lead.
A-Plus finally made some headway in the fourth inning as Tristan Griggs took a one-out walk, followed by a John Morgan Thomas single to put runners on first and second.
Moreland advanced to first on a passed ball after a strikeout, a bad throw to first base allowed Griggs to come home and trim the lead down to 6-1.
That would be as close as A-Plus came as Barber got the next two batters to go down swinging to end the inning with runners stranded at second and third.
MMC added security runs in the fifth as Graves started off the inning with a single, before Grubbs sent the base runner home with a triple deep to the left center fence for a 7-1 lead.
Grubbs advanced home a bad throw to third for a 9-1 lead and MMC scored the final run of the contest as Courtamanche took third base on a right fielder error before McVey sent Courtamanche home on a ground out fielder’s choice RBI to shortstop.
