Reasons for believing
“Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When you go, your steps shall not be hindered; and when you run, you shall not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction…” Proverbs 4:10-13
This will be the first Father’s Day for me without my dad. As I reflect on the blessings of my dad. I recall how we would restore classic Ford Mustangs. There where times that we would be slowed down on a restoration because of a difficult mechanical issue. So my dad would analyze the problem, step away from the car, and start welding and grinding on a piece of metal. Then he would go back to the car and within seconds the problem was solved. After that he would hand me this new tool that he designed and say, “Son, go put this in the toolbox and the next time we have this problem it wont slow us down. Remember where you put it, because no one makes a tool like this to do the job we need. You just can’t go buy one.” Sure enough, the next car that we restored had the same issue. Instead of fighting the problem for a while with regular mechanic tools, dad asked, “Where is the tool that I made?” I would go over to the toolbox, pull it out, and within seconds the problem was solved and it did not slow us down. What was so amazing was that there where special tools in daddy’s toolbox that he designed for specific and unusual jobs. Not until recently did I see the huge spiritual lesson that my heavenly Father was teaching me.
Our heavenly Father has a special toolbox where He has designed special tools for His children to use when dealing with life’s problems. Our heavenly Father’s toolbox is the Holy Bible.
Think how foolish it would be for a mechanic to attempt to work on a vehicle without going to his toolbox for the tools to do the job? That sounds ridiculous – right? It is no more ridiculous for a child of God who tries to deal with life’s problems without opening up the Bible for the right tools and instructions. God our Father has “given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness” 2 Peter 1:3.
That is also Solomon’s intention in our opening verses. He is instructing his son in the way of wisdom so he will have the right instructions for life.
If life is slowing you down, consider that you may be using the wrong tools. Remember that we can always go to our heavenly Daddy’s toolbox, the Holy Bible, and when we open it up we will always find the right tool to do the right job – regardless of our problem.
