Wednesday, July 5, 2017

The Tennessee District Public Defenders Conference has elected Donna Orr Hargrove to serve as the president of the Conference for fiscal year 2017-2018.

The Public Defenders Conference is a statewide system of elected public defenders from each judicial district. District public defenders represent persons who are charged with crimes and cannot afford to hire their own attorneys.

As president, Hargrove is the principal executive officer responsible in general for supervising and controlling the business and affairs of the Conference as well as assisting the Conference in advising the General Assembly on legislation to improve the criminal justice system.

Hargrove is the district public defender for the 17th Judicial District, which includes Bedford, Lincoln, Marshall and Moore counties. She was elected to the position in 1998, 2006 and 2014. Prior to this, she was an assistant public defender for five years. She has previously served as secretary/treasurer and vice-president for the Conference as well as a representative for the Middle District on the Conference’s executive committee.

Hargrove has offices in Marshall, Lincoln and Bedford counties. She oversees a staff that includes three legal secretaries, an investigator, and seven attorneys. While she has numerous administrative duties, her first and foremost responsibility is serving the citizens of the 17th Judicial District as a criminal defense lawyer. She is very proud of the hard work her entire staff puts forth in serving the citizens of this district.

Hargrove graduated from David Lipscomb University and the Nashville School of Law. She has been married to Joel Hargrove for more than 30 years. They are the proud parents of David Hargrove and Jessica Hargrove. She is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Marshall County Bar Association. She and her family are members of the Church Street Church of Christ where she and her husband teach Sunday school.

Hargrove states she is honored to have been elected to serve as the Conference President.
