14U all-stars finish second

The Marshall County Babe Ruth 14U all-stars get ready for battle Monday night.

The Marshall County 14U Babe Ruth all-stars hosted the state tournament at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Field in Lewisburg and were looking for a berth in the SE Regional Tournament in Ocala, Florida the first week of August.

After a big 8-0 win over Mt. Juliet in the opening round on Friday, Marshall County took down Lawrenceburg 7-2 on Saturday to get within one win from advancing before back-to-back losses to Tullahoma on Sunday and Monday ended their postseason.

Logan Courtemanche pitched 5.2 innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win Friday night.

Logan Courtemanche took the ball in Friday night’s opener and pitched 5.2 innings of no-hit baseball before leaving the game on a pitch count.

Bryson Whaley came on in relief and gave up the only hit to Mt. Juliet via a seventh inning one-out single to Brandon Paul.

Luke Terry had three hits and 2RBIs in the 8-0 win over Mt. Juliet Friday night.

Luke Terry went 3-for-4, and JW Beasley (2-for-3), Logan McKnight (2-for-2), and Brady Calahan (2-for-3) all had two hits for Marshall County.

Courtemanche drove home a run in the first inning and McKnight knocked in two runs in the bottom of the third for an early 3-0 lead.

Courtemanche struck out the side in order in the fourth inning and set down Mt. Juliet 1-2-3 in the fifth before Terry and Calahan knocked in one apiece in the bottom of the stanza to make it 5-0.

After Courtemanche and Whaley teamed up for a scoreless sixth inning on the mound, Marshall County added its final three runs on RBIs by Beasley, Whaley and Terry in the home half of the inning.

Whaley induced a ground out for the first out of the seventh inning before Paul singled to center field, but a strikeout and a game ending ground out gave the Marshall County boys the win.

In Saturday’s second round game versus Lawrenceburg, the two teams were tied at 1-1 entering the fifth inning before Marshall County took the lead on a Caleb Grooms RBI base hit.

McKnight, who pitched a complete game for Marshall County, held Lawrenceburg in check before the hosts broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning as Grooms, Whaley and McKnight all drove home one run apiece.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning as Marshall County finished the job and headed for a championship final versus Tullahoma on Sunday.

Caleb Grooms had a big tournament for Marshall County, going 7-for-13 in the four games.

Grooms went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove home three runs and Beasley, Whaley, and Courtemanche had two hits apiece for Marshall County.

Marshall County got off to a bad start on Saturday, giving up five runs in the second inning on some shaky defense and timely hitting by Tullahoma and they never recovered in a big 17-2 loss.

Tullahoma banged out 20 hits off three Marshall County pitchers as Will Zebick (3RBI), Parker (3RBI), Donovan Pearson, and Zach Milan (3RBI) all had three hits in the game, while Caleb Holloway, Chad Farler, and Jacob Weeks (2RBI) had a pair of base knocks.

Logan Courtemanche went 2-for-3 and Beasley, Terry, McKnight, Calahan, Connor McVey and Grooms all managed one hit each.

The two teams came back on Monday for a one game do-or-die matchup for the state championship and it turned into an early dogfight as both squads scored three first inning runs.

Christian Stacey tossed 5.2 solid innings on the mound for Marshall County Monday night.

Tullahoma got some help with the home team committing three errors as Marshall County starting pitcher Christian Stacey gave up just one hit in the frame.

JW Beasley leads off Monday’s title game with a walk and came around to score Marshall County’s first run.

Stacey got all the runs back in the bottom of the inning when he slammed a base loaded, two-out double to tie the contest at 3-3.

Whaley put Marshall County in front 5-3 with a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning and that would be the score going to the top of the fourth when Tullahoma scored three runs to take a 6-5 lead.

Marshall County went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth and had one baserunner on in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not push the tying run across home plate.

Tullahoma added a big insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI base knock by Holloway to make it 7-5.

Nolan Blackburn, who had come in for starter Zach Milan in the fourth inning set down Marshall County 1-2-3 to end the game and secure the state title for Tullahoma.
