A crowd approaching 500 people gathered in Cornersville Friday night, July 14, for the Lions Clubís walking horse show.

Now in its 71st year, the annual event at the Horse Show Grounds attracts equine competitors from across the United States. Thirty-four classes of competition were fielded, with a total of 143 horses making the rounds. Local horses were uncommon throughout the event, with some coming from as far as New York and California.

Of special note were two Cornersville locals who won their classes. Alexis Kingís Bad Chick took the blue ribbon among 2-year-old Mares and Geldings Amateur. Rider and trainer Jimmy McConnel rode Gen A Mighty in the Walking Stallions Stake (Canter) to earn a blue ribbon at the end of the night.

Bobby Richards from Franklin, Tenn., is the owner, rider and trainer of Hey Charlene, and took top honors in the Open Trail Pleasure class. Presenting his trophy is 2017 Miss Cornersville, Allison Henderson, who is escorted by Jayson Stafford.

Show chairman Bobby McDaniel was the primary driver of the event, with several Lions Club members assisting. Scott Beatty was the judge, with announcer Bobby Sands keeping the competitors and crowd informed about the fast-paced event. The show started at 6 p.m., and the final awards were given near midnight. The ringmaster this year was Steve Wolaver, and organist Brian Perry returned again for what he said was at least his tenth time.
