Drivers along New Lake Road won’t be seeing double. There will be two Hopkins’ bridges along the road soon. Commissioner Glen White introduced two resolutions at the last meeting of the County Commission to name bridges in his district. One is in memory of R. Preston Hopkins, Jr., a one-time Mayor of Lewisburg who also played key roles in the establishment of both the Housing Authority and the Recreation Center. He was also a charter member of the Lewisburg Lions Club and the Elks Lodge. A second bridge will be named in honor of his fellow Commissioner Robert P. “Bob” Hopkins, III. The younger Hopkins served as the county’s director of Emergency Management from 1988 to 2014, aiding in the establishment of many of the counties volunteer fire departments. The family home for three generations is on New Lake Road and provided the dirt to build the levee at New Lake. Pictured with Bob Hopkins III (center) are his wife Carol and son Bob.
