The power of belief

“Whosoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loves him that begat loves him also that is begotten of him. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” - 1 John 5:1,5

Christians many times get so caught up in living everyday life that we easily fall into an attitude of setting God over in a corner. We even may be dedicated to attend worship on Sunday and give God that one day of the week, but due to the pressures of life Christians can find themselves drifting away from the promises of God while trying to handle life by our own wisdom and self-confidence.

Years ago it was reported a hunter was lost in the woods simply because he was stubborn. The man had a compass with him, but he was so confident in himself as a good woodsman that he refused the clear evidence as to his direction. The hunter refused to take time to look at his compass, until it was too dark to see it. Well not knowing exactly where he was, he bedded down in some leaves under the shelter of a rock. In the morning he decided again to trust in himself and in his own gift of direction. The day wore on and he made no progress. He decided he played the fool long enough, so he pulled out the compass from his pocket and was immediately on the right road home. This man was lost, and continued to be lost – until he admitted that he was lost. Then and only then did he find the right way, and he overcame the woods that held him captive by his own foolish and stubborn confidence.

Occasionally, the Christian’s life can be like this lost hunter. There are times we find ourselves lost in a situation or circumstance only because we are too stubborn to take the time and use what God has given us. Furthermore, when we think we have come to our senses, well the next morning, we are like this hunter and we awake to our own confidence once again – only to continue to walk around in circles. Not until we admit that we are lost and need help do we get God’s compass out, called the Bible. Once we look into it we immediately find ourselves on the right track overcoming the things of the world, simply because our compass always points to Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14).

The apostle John makes it very clear that believers are sovereignly born of God and that God’s love is poured out upon believers. God purposed Jesus to be what we need everyday throughout the day, and our strength and direction to overcome the things of the world is by simply believing in Jesus His Son.
