Lady Rockets fall in overtime
It took two days to decide the outcome of the District 6A Soccer Tournament opener between fifth-seeded Forrest and number-four Fayetteville, who prevailed 3-2 on overtime penalty kicks.
Some logistical school bus issues caused the Lady Rockets to arrive just in the nick of time for the opening kickoff at Don Davidson Park Field in Fayetteville Tuesday.
Without any kind of warmup, Forrest took the pitch and seemed out of rhythm as the Lady Tigers dominated the first half with Erin Bradford scoring at the 4:09 mark of the contest as Fayetteville pressured the Forrest defense.
Senior Rickee Gayle Carter finally managed a shot on Fayetteville keeper DJ Horton at the 10-minute mark, but it was one of just a few chances for the Lady Rockets in the first half.
Sophia Solomon came up with Fayetteville’s second goal at the 23:44 mark of the first half and that would be the score at the break.
The Lady Rockets came out of the break recharged, quickly putting some offensive pressure on Fayetteville and it paid off when Forrest was awarded a penalty at the 30-minute mark of the second half.
Macy Brown made the Lady Tigers pay for the mistake, nailing the free kick to make it a 2-1 contest.
The two squads battled as darkness and a light fog began to creep in on the lightless field at Fayetteville.
It became increasingly difficult to see, but not for sophomore striker Zoe Long, who found her way into an opening and drilled the game-tying goal at the 22-minute mark of the second half.
The teams continued to fight for the deciding goal, but with 6:28 remaining in the contest, the game was called due to darkness.
The two teams resumed action Wednesday night and after playing out the remainder of regulation time, the contest went to two, 10-minte overtime periods where the score was still tied at 2-1.
The marathon continued into two, 5-minute overtime sessions with still no deciding goal before the game went to penalty kicks where Fayetteville prevailed, ending the Lady Rockets’ season.
Fayetteville lost to top-seeded Cascade 4-1 in the first of two semifinal games at Forrest last night, while Community beat Huntland 2-1 in the nightcap.
