The last time Cornersville and Elkton went head-to-head the Bulldogs came away with a 17-point win at Elkton and judging by the size of and number of the Elks in warmups, the second time around looked like another easy win for the Bulldogs.

But Cornersville coach Matt Hagan was convinced this time around wouldn't be so easy.

"That team right there is better than they look," Hagan said. "It's going to be a closer game than the last game. These guys are quick."

Just as predicted, the Elks took the Bulldogs down to the wire before Cornersville pulled out the 30-26 win.

Trey Luna led Cornersville with nine points and three assists while Mason Calahan added seven points and two rebounds.

Tyrell Randolph led Elkton with 11 points and Jayson Rose added eight points.

The Bulldogs allowed just four Elk players to score and held them to just three first quarter points and two third quarter points.

The ballgame looked to be anything but a close game at the beginning as Calahan nailed a 3-pointer and a short jumper to push the lead to 7-3 before a Luna layup and jumper extended the lead to 11-3 before the Elks decided to make a game out of it.

Randolph scored on a nice jump hook and Rose faked a mid-range jumper before driving in and scoring a layup.

Clay Mitchell tied up the game at 11-11 with a short jumper before Luna drilled his only three of the night for a 14-11 lead with 17 seconds left in the half.

Randolph trimmed the lead to 14-13 on a driving layup with six seconds in the period to keep the game tight heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs gained a little cushion in the third quarter as Luna knocked home two free throws at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 21-15 lead heading into an exciting fourth quarter.

Bryce Woodard scored on an inbound pass to push the lead to 23-16.

Randolph answered with a coast-to-coast layup before Calahan answered with a beautiful one-handed pass to Rhett Woodard to keep the lead at seven.

Eli Welch (22) goes up high for the opening tip against Elkton on eighth-grade night.

J.C. Spray knocked down his only basket of the game, a three, on a pass from Luna off a Calahan steal to push the lead to 28-18 and seemingly put the game out of reach, but Elkton had other plans.

Rose connected on a basket and knocked down a free throw with 48 seconds remaining to trim the lead to 28-24 and Randolph stole the ensuing pass and scored a layup with 10 seconds left to bring the Elks to within a basket at 28-26.

The Elks brought the house on the following inbound press, but Calahan snuck behind the defense for a layup at the buzzer and the Bulldogs escaped with a four-point win despite holding a 10-point lead with over a minute remaining.
