The Forrest Middle School Rockets hosted the Fayetteville Middle School Tigers Thursday night at Chapel Hill in an early season matchup with FMS winning a 5-4 extra-inning thriller.

FMS had just four hits in the game, while Fayetteville managed five hits off three Forrest pitchers.

John Randle Dippold, Cason Warner, Brayden Bowyer, and Clayton Clarke all had one hit in the contest with Warner driving in two runs and Bowyer had one RBI.

Andrew Timmons started on the hill for the Rockets and tossed 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits before Dippold came to the mound in middle relief, turning in a sparkling performance with 3 2/3 innings of no-hit scoreless ball, including six strikeouts.

Kain Moses pitched the final two innings to pick up the win for the Rockets.

Fayetteville struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Will Harwell.

Brayden Bowyer slams an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.

The Rockets tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Brayden Bowyer after Warner reached third base on a Fayetteville throwing error.

Fayetteville bounced right back with two runs in the top of the third inning on just one hit, two Forrest errors, and a hit batsman.

Cason Warner drills a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning.

In the home half of the inning Forrest added three runs to take a 4-2 lead via a two-run single by Warner and a passed ball that scored Moses, who had reached on a Fayetteville fielding error.

Forrest did not have a base hit the remainder of the contest.

Dippold struck out the side in order in the top of the fourth inning and the Tigers escaped a bases loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the stanza.

There was no scoring in the fifth or sixth innings before the Tigers came up with a game-tying pair of runs in the top of seventh inning on a two-run single by Jacob Thomas.

The damage could have been worse, but Moses got out of a no-out jam on a big 4-3 line drive double play snared by FMS second baseman Ryan Meglis and an inning ending strikeout by Dippold.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, FMS loaded the bases thanks to three consecutive bases on balls and it looked like the Rockets might win the game, but Fayetteville pitcher Bryson Casey caught a bouncing ball and threw to home for the force out.

Warner argued the call and was ejected from the game for throwing his helmet and will miss the next two games.

A groundout ended the inning and the game went to extra frames.

Moses was strong on the mound in the top of the eighth, giving up one hit while striking out three Tigers to preserve the tie.

Dippold walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth and promptly stole second and third base before Smith laid down a perfect bunt that Casey fielded and threw to first for the out, but Dippold raced home and scored easily to end the contest.
