Haurez no-hits Richland in Tigers’ home opener
The Marshall County baseball team opened up the season Monday night in Nashville with a 16-7 win over Hume-Fogg with Nathan Derryberry picking up the win on the mound.
The Tigers returned to Lewisburg for their home opener on Tuesday at Joe George Field and for the second consecutive night, the Marshall County (2-0) came out swinging hot bats and pitcher Hunter Haurez threw a masterful performance, finishing with a no-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over the Raiders.
"I felt pretty good out there tonight," Haurez said. "Staying warm was my game plan. I knew I had to stay warm to pitch decently, so I just kept my rhythm and pitched good. I feel great about this season and this group and if we stay together, this season can turn out special."
The Tigers backed up Haurez on offense with junior Mitchell Ford finishing with four RBIs, Nathan Derryberry three RBIs, and Haurez and Preston Shelton knocked in one run apiece.
"Well, we swung it pretty good tonight," MCHS coach Mike “Monk” Reese stated. "That's pretty good because we're playing three freshmen out there, we're only playing two seniors tonight, so we're pretty young. But this club is pretty fun."
"They like to play the game of baseball," Reese added. "They're just going out and having some fun and playing the game like it's supposed to be played."
The Raiders dug themselves in an early hole as Shelton reached second on an infield error followed by a beautiful bunt by Walker Whaley to send the leadoff man to third before scoring on a wild pitch.
Ford came through with an RBI single to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Haurez helped his own cause in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to bring in pinch runner Bryson Whaley before Derryberry dropped a deep single into left field to bring in two more runs for a 5-0 lead.
Haurez continued to own the Raiders at the plate, striking out five of six batters in the third and fourth innings to hold the lead.
The Tigers broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth as Derryberry delivered a two-out single to left to push the lead to 6-0.
Jacob Autry followed with a walk before Ford brought home three more Tiger runs with an inside-the- park home run deep to the right/centerfield fence.
"Coach (Ryan) Henry told us that if he's moving the glove around than it's going to be some other kind of pitch," Ford explained. "So I noticed he wasn't moving his glove at all so I knew it was gonna be a fastball.”
“His ball didn't have much movement, it was kind of flat so I just sat on it. It was a little high, but I just swung and hit it hard."
Haurez sat the Raiders down in order in the top of the fifth and after Ryan Kirby opened the bottom of the inning with a single to left, Shelton delivered again with a deep shot to bring home Kirby and the umpires called the 10-0 ballgame.
The Tigers takes its undefeated record to Manchester on Thursday night with a date against Coffee County Central.
"No slight against either team that we've played, but they're not going to be the caliber of team that we're going to be playing in the district," Reese said. "As we go, you're going to see it get a little harder, for example, Thursday we're going over to Coffee County and they just beat Columbia and they're a sound 3A ball club."
"So you know, we got our feet wet to get in the groove and now we're gonna have to step it up a little bit."
