Jimmie Ruth Boulton Phelps
Jimmie Ruth Boulton Phelps, 93, died Friday, March 16, 2018, at NHC Oakwood.
Mrs. Jimmie was born in Nashville, TN on Aug. 20, 1924, to John White Boulton and his wife Inez McMurry Boulton, who preceded her in death along with one brother, William Boulton and her beloved husband, Dr. Jack Phelps, to whom she was married 53 years. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Jackson (Debbie) Phelps, Jr.; two daughters, Anne Phelps (Kenneth) Reed and Rebecca Phelps Baxter; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Jimmie graduated with honors from Jackson High School and from Lambeth College, Magna Cum Laude. She received her Masters in Library Science with emphasis on childrenís literature from Peabody Library School. She worked at Southwestern College Library and later at the Mobile City Library as Director of the Childrenís Library.
She married Kenneth Jackson Phelps on June 14, 1946, after his return from World War II. She had her first child, Kenneth Jackson Phelps, Jr. in 1947, while his father was in medical school. Dr. Jack opened his practice in 1950 in Lewisburg after which, Anne and Becky were born.
They both loved Lewisburg having picked it as the place where they wanted to raise their children. Jimmie participated in community activities, civil and social clubs including the Elks Club, Garden Club, Womenís Club, UMW, Book Clubs, and Bridge Clubs. She was well known for her many hobbies and her knowledge of antiques and roses, and was an avid reader. She had a brilliant mind which was obvious to everyone she met. Jimmie will be missed by her family and her many friends.
Visitation was held on Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2018, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Londonís Funeral Home. The family will be at the First United Methodist on Monday, March 19 from noon until the funeral hour at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Lone Oak Cemetery beside her husband, Dr. Jack.
