Lions get revenge on Rockets at Chapel Hill
Forrest suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night at Chapel Hill as the Columbia Central Lions got revenge on the Rockets with a 3-1 win.
Forrest had beaten Columbia Central 4-2 a week earlier in Maury County.
“Columbia Central is a great ballclub and it’s hard to beat them twice,” Forrest coach Bart Joyce said. “But its good baseball, it’s a game we can get better and see great competition.”
Luke Flatt came up huge for the Lions, banging two hits and driving in one run at the plate, while picking up the win on the mound.
Flatt pitched six innings and gave up one earned run on six hits, while striking out 10 and walking zero Forrest batters.
JJ Kercado had two hits (BB, RBI) and Bryce Symlar (RS, HBP, 2SB) and Hayden Dodson had one hit apiece for the Lions, who had lost three games in a row coming into the contest.
Taylar Hollaway came on for Flatt in the bottom of the seventh and picked up the save, striking out the side to end the game.
JT Ferguson and Dustin Brashear (RBI) had two hits apiece for the Rockets, while Ethan Mealer and Dylan Eady (RS) managed one base knock each.
Brashear turned in a solid performance on the hill for Forrest, tossing six innings before Grayson Whaley came on to pitch a scoreless top of the seventh.
“Our pitching was good, Brashear threw the ball well and kept us in the game the whole time,” Joyce said. “That’s a good hitting ballclub and they are going to get hits.”
“And Grayson came in and pitched the ball well also and gave us a chance to win, but just fell a little short.”
Central scored first as Symlar was hit by a pitch to lead off the contest and proceeded to steal second and third base before Flatt plated him with an RBI single.
The Lions made it a 2-0 game in the top of the third when Flatt stroked a leadoff double and came around to score on a Jack Quinn two-out, fielder’s choice RBI.
The Rockets got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Eady led off with a base hit and scored on a one-out Brashear double to left field.
Flatt escaped any further damage as he got a strikeout and an inning ending ground ball to third base.
Brashear set down the Lions 1-2-3 in the fourth and fifth innings before giving up an unearned run in the top of the fifth that put Columbia Central in front 3-1.
Flatt gave up one baserunner the remainder of his stint on the hill and in the bottom of the seventh inning, Forrest wasted a leadoff walk by Jarvis Lyttle as Hollaway whiffed three straight Rocket batters to end the game.
Forrest (3-1) traveled to Ezell-Harding on Thursday for a doubleheader and returns home on Monday when they open up District 12-AA play with an intra-county rivalry game with Marshall County.
“We are going into district play next week and we are working on things trying to get better from these non-district games,” Joyce said. “Tomorrow we will go over to Ezell-Harding and learn from our mistakes and get back after it.”
