McPeake leads Scotts Hill over Rockets
The Single A Classic came to Chapel Hill on Friday and the tournament started out with two former 1A powers that have since moved up to 2A for the 2018 season.
The Rockets faced Scotts Hill (8-3), who have made an appearance in the 1A state tournament three out of the past five years with a championship in 2016.
The Lions led for the entire game after scoring in four out of the seven innings and although the Rockets threatened late in the fifth inning, Scotts Hill went on to win the game 6-1.
"We hit the ball," Forrest coach Bart Joyce said. "We had some shots, they were just right at people. Those are gonna fall. We've just got to keep hitting the ball. We could be a little more aggressive at the plate a little earlier in the count."
"We're falling behind a little bit at the plate and hitting what the pitcher wants instead of hitting the pitch that we want to hit," Joyce continued. "Defensively, we've got to make routine plays. We're capable of doing it."
Grayson Whaley started on the mound for Forrest and went 3.1 innings, giving up nine hits and four runs before Lane Allen came in to close the game for the final 3.2 innings.
Allen came in with the bases loaded in the third inning and managed to get out of the jam with no damage done and went on to strikeout three and give up just two runs the rest of the ball game.
"It really doesn't bother me to come into situations like that," Allen stated. "I was hoping to go in in a situation like that. I've done that since I was little, so I just kind of go out there and do what I was brought in to do."
J.T. Ferguson led the Rockets with two hits in four at-bats on the day.
The two squads went into the third inning tied 0-0, but Logan Mooney started the Lions’ inning off with a double to the left/center fence before Nathan Lewis added a single and Hunter Beechem brought home the first run of the game with a double over the center fielder’s head.
Colton McPeake brought in the second run with a fielder’s choice to first base and Hunter Maness brought in the final run of the inning with a single up the middle.
The Rockets threatened in the bottom of the third after Ferguson reached on an infield single and Jaylen Smith earned a walk, but Dustin Brashear followed with a pop-out to right to strand both runners.
The Lions produced another run in the fourth on another McPeake single, but Allen came into the game to force the final two batters into two straight pop-ups.
The Rockets finally got on the board after Ryan Moses reached on a third baseman error and Drew Daughrity followed with a bunt single.
Ferguson hit a one out single into left/center before Smith hit a fly out to center field to score pinch runner Gauge Anderson to trim the lead to 4-1.
With two runners on base, Brashear sent a rocket into left/center but the Scotts Hill outfielder stuck his arm over the fence to grab the potential game-tying hit.
The Lions scored two more runs over the next three innings to secure the 6-1 victory.
"That team right there is like playing every district game that we're gonna play," Joyce said. "Every district game we're gonna play is gonna be that caliber of team and district games are always a little more intense than non-district games and it's great for us to play against that type of pitching and hitting."
