After an hour and 15 minute rain delay at Eagleville Tuesday night, the Cornersville Bulldogs and the Eagles squared off in rainy, sloppy conditions for the most important game of the season.

A win by the Bulldogs would have sent the two squads back to Cornersville for a one-game match for the District 8-A title on Wednesday, but it was not to be as the Bulldogs turned in a subpar performance in an 11-3 loss.

The 11 runs were the most scored by an opponent versus the Bulldogs this season and the majority of the damage was self-inflicted as only six of Eagleville’s runs were earned.

The Bulldogs committed three errors in the field at crucial times in the contest and the Eagles were handed 12 free baserunners via 10 bases on balls and two hit batsmen.

Cornersville was fired up to start the game as they scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but failed to score again in the contest.

Austin Wells picked up the win on the mound for Eagleville, tossing five innings before Blake Brewer came on to finish the game.

Bulldog ace Graham Duke did not have his best stuff and lasted just 2.1 innings before leaving the mound.

Duke gave up one hit and only four out of the six runs he allowed were earned, but he did not help his own cause as he walked seven Eagleville batters.

Cameron Whitaker slams an RBI single in the second inning to put the Bulldogs in front 1-0.

Cameron Whitaker, Bryce Hagan and Caleb Crowell all drove in a run in the third inning.

Tilden Jackson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and reached on an Eagleville error, while Hagan, Crowell, Raymond Cooksey, Kolbe McMahon, and Whitaker all had one hit apiece in the contest.

Eagleville scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on just one hit, two Cornersville errors, two bases on balls, and a passed ball.

After the Bulldogs failed to score in the top of the third inning, the flood gates opened in the home half of the frame as Eagleville sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times to take a 9-3 lead.

The only two hits in the inning were RBI singles by Caleb Holdcraft and Austin Wells as four Eagle batters reached on walks and two more were beaned by Raymond Cooksey, who came on for Duke with one out and the score 5-3.

Cornersville had two baserunners on in the fourth and fifth innings, but failed to push any runs across and the Bulldogs only had one runner on base the final two innings.

The Eagles completed the season series sweep with an 8-2 win over the Bulldogs at Cornersville on Wednesday night.
