Rockets blanked on senior night
The Forrest Rockets celebrated a record nine graduating seniors in Logan Cedotal, Jaylen Smith, Ryan Moses, Jarvis Lyttle, J.T. Ferguson, Dylan Eady, Drew Daughrity, Dustin Brashear, and Lane Allen that all took spots in the starting lineup Monday in a 6-0 loss to Page.
“The record they have put together at 85-39-1 and all the district titles that they have been a part of speaks for itself,” Forrest coach Bart Joyce said. “They have all work hard and developed a great comradery on this team and I’m proud of them and what they have accomplished.”
Only one those seniors managed a base hit and it was Ferguson, who reached on a bad hop single in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up a no-hit bid by the Patriots pitching staff.
“You use all these last couple non-district games to get your reps in and get the bats rolling and fine tune things,” Joyce said. “We have another game tomorrow at Coffee County and we have another chance to get rolling and get theses bats going.”
“I have no doubt they will show up and be ready to go.”
Five Page pitchers took the hill versus the Rockets with starter Tyler Vernon picking up the win.
Allen started on the mound for the Rockets and lasted 3.1 innings before he left the game.
Ben Pickman, Blake Schmitt, and Ronnie Caricofe all had two hits apiece for Page, while Brooks Rainwater, Christian Tidmore, and Jack Gammer all managed one base knock.
Schmitt and Tidmore both drove in a run in the top of the first inning and the Rockets threatened in the home half of the frame as Smith drew a leadoff walk and stole second base.
Ferguson coaxed a base on balls one out later before a fielder’s choice out landed Forrest runners on the corners.
Ferguson took off for second base and Smith headed for home where he looked like he avoided the tag, but was called out on the inning ending play.
Page scored two more runs in the top of the second inning and added one run apiece in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead.
Forrest managed to get a runner to second base in the third, fifth, and on Ferguson’s hit and subsequent steal of second base in the sixth inning, but failed to score each time.
“I hate this is coming to an end, I would play this the rest of my life if I could,” Eady said. “I know all these seniors will give it everything we got and I pray it will be enough.”
The Rockets went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“Hopefully we come out tomorrow and adjust and play Rocket baseball,” Eady said. “Tonight was not Rockets baseball, honestly I’m not sure what it was. We didn’t come out swinging the bats and our defense coming out was shaky, so hopefully tomorrow we will come out a different team.”
Forrest (15-12) played Coffee County on Tuesday and opens up the District 12-AA Tournament at home on Thursday at 5 p.m. versus Murfreesboro Central Magnet School (17-14).
The two squads split the home and away regular season series with each team winning 6-5 at home.
“I told them we have to break the game down and win every inning,” Joyce said. “Right now we have to focus on inning by inning and game by game and the next one is Coffee County.”
