The Elks versus Marshall Medical Center (MMC) has been the longest standing rivalry since the beginning of the Marshall County Babe Ruth League and another chapter was written on Tuesday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Field in Lewisburg as the Elks stole a 4-3 win to hand MMC its first loss of the season.

The Elks (4-2) only had two hits in the game, but made the most of three bases on balls and six fielding miscues by MMC (4-1) to pick up the win.

Zack Graves went the distance on the mound for MMC and was the tough-luck loser as he only gave up two earned runs, while striking out eight and walking three Elks’ batters.

Bryson Whaley started on the mound for the Elks and MMC got four hits and two walks off Whaley and scored one run, but struck out four times.

Carson Cheek came on for Whaley in the fifth inning and picked up the win, giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out four and walking two.

The Elks scored all four of its runs without a hit, beginning in the first inning when Javarria Rucker was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and stole second and third base before scoring on an MMC error.

Whaley escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the first and in the top of the second inning the Elks did it again, as Micah Riddle led off with a walk, went to second on an error, third on a groundout, and scored on another MMC miscue to make it 2-0.

MMC did not score in the bottom of the second inning and Graves set down the Elks 1-2-3 in the top of the third.

Caleb Grooms got things going for MMC in the home half of the inning as he led off with a base on balls.

Grooms swiped second base and came around to score on a Connor McVey RBI single before Whaley retired the next three MMC batters in order to end the inning.

Kel Greer got in the action for the Elks in the top of the fourth inning as he led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on an error before scooting home on a passed ball to make it 3-1.

MMC’s Brady Calahan tied the game with a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning.

MMC came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out rally as Graves walked and Logan Courtemanche singled before both runners scored on a Brady Calahan triple to the left/center field gap.

Graves gave up a two-out single to J.W. Beasley in the fifth inning and set down the Elks 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth.

Micah Riddle came up huge for the Elks on Tuesday night, walking twice and scoring both times he reached base.

Cheek retired the MMC boys in the sixth inning and the Elks came up with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh as Riddle walked to lead off the frame and stole second base.

Will McAdams came up with a huge sacrifice bunt to move Riddle to third base and he scored on an MMC error to make it 4-3.

Cheek finished off MMC with a pair of groundouts and a fly ball to right field.
