Marshall Medical Center (MMC) moved closer to clinching the Babe Ruth League title with a convincing 8-2 win over A-Plus in the opening game of Monday night’s doubleheader at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Field in Lewisburg.

MMC (6-1) was boosted by strong pitching performances as Logan Courtemanche and Zack Graves combined on a four-hitter with both surrendering a pair of hits apiece and neither allowed an earned run in the contest.

Courtemanche started on the mound and struck out four and walked four in his three innings of work to pick up the win before Graves came on and whiffed nine and issued one base on balls in a four-inning stint.

Graves also had a big night at the plate with two hits, a base on balls, three runs scored, one RBI, and three stolen bases.

Conner McVey came up with three hits, scored twice and stole a base and Courtemanche had one safety, reached on an error, walked once, stole one base, and scored two runs.

Blake Moreland turned in a gutsy performance on the mound for A-Plus as he threw 133 pitches in a complete game loss.

Blake Moreland pitched a fantastic game for A-Plus, going the distance and tossing 133 pitches in the contest. Moreland struck out nine and walked seven.

Matthew Goodman went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Luke Terry and Ethan Spivey had one hit apiece for A-Plus (2-5).

MMC jumped on A-Plus early, scoring three times in the top of the first inning as Brady Calahan drove in one run with a bases loaded walk and two more runs came home on an A-Plus error with the bases juiced.

A-Plus scored its only two runs in the game in the home half of the inning on one hit (Goodman) and three MMC errors.

MMC first baseman Connor McVey had three hits in the game and came up with this huge defensive play in the first inning.

MMC came up with two runs in the top of the second inning as they rallied with nobody on and two outs, beginning with a McVey double to left field.

Graves followed with an RBI base hit and he came around to score on an error to make it 5-2.

Courtemanche shutout A-Plus over the next three innings and Moreland tossed two scoreless innings before allowing an unearned run in the top of the fifth as MMC increased its lead to 6-2.

Moreland struck out two batters in the top of the sixth and Graves whiffed the side in order in the bottom of the inning.

MMC scored two more runs on no hits in the top of the seventh and Graves finished off A-Plus in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
