MMC takes down Elks in Babe Ruth finale
First place Marshall Medical Center finished up the Babe Ruth League regular season in style on Saturday, beating A-Plus 14-7 in game one before taking down archrival Elks 6-3 in game two.
MMC standout all-star Zack Graves slammed the first over the fence home run of the season versus A-Plus and came back with another long dinger against the Elks.
Graves’ home run versus the Elks was MMC’s only hit of the game and it came in the third inning.
Brady Calahan picked up the win on the mound for MMC as he was the recipient of the early lead and only pitched 1.2 innings before Ashton Grubbs came in and tossed the final 3.1 innings of the five-inning game to earn the save.
MMC scored three first inning runs on no hits as the Elks’ committed three out of its four errors in the game during the frame.
Kyrklinn Wunderlin got things going for the Elks when he walked with one out in the top of the second and went to second and third on a pair of Calahan wild pitches.
Micah Riddle was hit by a Calahan pitch before a passed ball scored Wunderlin and sent Riddle all the way to third base.
Riddle came home on a sacrifice fly RBI by Bryson Whaley.
Will McAdams was hit by a pitch and Jaylon Roberts drew a base on balls before Grubbs came to the mound and got out of the jam with an inning ending strikeout.
Whaley came to the hill in relief of McAdams in the second inning and struck out the side in order.
The Elks stranded a pair of baserunners in the top of the third as Grubbs escaped another jam.
Conner McVey walked to lead off the bottom of the inning before Graves sent a shot deep over the left field fence, making it a 5-2 contest.
Grubbs stayed strong in the top of the fourth inning and MMC added another unearned run in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead.
Brandon Jacobs led off the top of the fifth inning with a single and Elks’ speedster all-star Javarria Rucker followed with another base hit.
Grubbs picked Jacobs off at second base, but Rucker stole second and went to third on a ground ball out before scoring on a balk to make it 6-3 and the game ended on a ground ball to Graves at shortstop.
Rucker had two hits for the Elks, while Carson Cheek, Kel Greer, and Jacobs all had one safety apiece.
The 15 year-old All-Stars travel to Pulaski on Friday for the district tournament that runs through Sunday and the Marshall County Babe Ruth League hosts the state tournament that begins on July 13 at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Field in Lewisburg.
The closing ceremony award photos will be in Friday’s edition of the Tribune.
