Marshall County High School has held the coveted Gary Wells Cup for all 11 years of the intra-county golf match named in honor of the longtime Tiger golf coach, but things may change this season as the Cornersville Bulldogs closed in on the prize after the first two rounds of the three-round, nine-hole event.

The Bulldogs shot a combined 181 in Tuesday’s opening round at the Ewell Butler Golf Course in Lewisburg with the Tigers trailing by 12 strokes and Forrest in third place with 195 strokes.

The top three scores from each boy’s team and the top two for the girls are used for the day total.

Raymond Cooksey led the way for the Bulldogs with a 42, and Joseph Mulliniks and Graham Duke carded identical 46’s.

Colton Barber, who led the Tigers in scoring both days, executes a nice pitch shot up to the Par 4, ninth hole on Wednesday.

Colton Barber was low man for the Tigers with a 43, while Bryson Whaley had 48 and older brother Walker carded a 50.

The Rockets leading duffer was Grayson Whaley with a 42, followed by Hunter Ferguson with 47, and Sebastian Thompson and John Garcia both shot 53.

Sara Browning, who had the low score both days for the Lady Rockets, just misses a par putt on the first hole at Henry Horton.

The Forrest girls took a big lead on day one as Sara Browning was the lone golfer in the entire field to break 40 as the Lady Rocket junior shot 39. Senior Micah Toombs carded a 50 for the 89 total for the day.

The Lady Bulldogs were seven strokes back with Braylin Powers shooting 44 and Chelsea Coble had a 52.

On Wednesday at Henry Horton, the Tigers made a comeback as they won the day score with a 197, three strokes clear of the Bulldogs.

Barber was low man once again for the Tigers as he carded a 44, Walker Whaley shot 48, and T.J. Beardsley got in the mix with a 51.

The Tigers (390) trail the Bulldogs (381) by nine strokes going into Thursday’s final round at Saddle Creek Golf Club.

Cornersville was led by Cooksey with a 47, and Tyler Wolaver, Mulliniks, and Jackson all carded identical 51’s.

Ferguson was low man for the Rockets with a 44, Garcia shot 51, and Thompson carded a 53.

The Lady Rockets increased their lead on Wednesday as Browning shot 49 and sophomore Carissa Curtis came in with a 51.
