The Cornersville Middle School Bulldogs opened the season in style Thursday night at Frog Bottom with a 20-0 shutout win over Highland Rim.

The Bulldogs dominated the game in the trenches as they rushed the ball for 273 yards, while giving up just 70 yards rushing on defense.

Nick Nuenswander led the ground attack with six carries for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Riley Qualls also had six carries for 57 yards and a TD and Mason Calahan had two touches for 53 yards and a score.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over the first two times they had possession in the first quarter on an interception and fumble, but held the Hornets both times they had it.

Highland Rim drove to the midfield stripe before being stopped on downs when a fourth down pass attempt by Kyle Kelley fell incomplete.

After two plays, the Bulldogs fumbled again.

The defense held firm, forcing a Highland Rim punt with 1:19 remaining in the first half.

Cornersville began the ensuing drive at its own 33-yard line and needed just one play to score as Nuenswander took the first down handoff and raced 67 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good and the Bulldogs led 12-0 with 1:01 left in the first half.

Highland Rim ran two more negative running plays before the first half ended.

The Hornets got the ball to start the second half and ran six plays before a Qualls interception at the 29-yard line spoiled the scoring chance.

The Bulldogs protected the line of scrimmage once again as the Hornets went nowhere and gave up the ball on downs with 57 seconds left in the third quarter.

The ‘O’ Line took over after the stop as Cornersville drove 63 yards in just six plays with Calahan putting the cap on the scoring drive via a 14-yard TD run. This time the two-point conversion run was successful by Nuenswander and the Bulldogs led 20-0 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter.

A summer rain squall engulfed the field from the southwest, stopping any attempt by the Hornets for a comeback and the game ended with the 20-0 win for Cornersville.

Angel Martinez had a big night for the Hornets as he rushed for 65 yards, caught one pass, had an interception and a fumble recovery.
