Dabbs runs over FMS Rockets in home opening loss
After a 36-0 season opening win at Liberty, the Forrest Middle School Rockets ran in to a freight train Thursday night at Chapel Hill in a 34-16 loss to the Community Vikings.
Community running back Jay Dabbs dominated the contest with four touchdowns runs with three end zone scampers coming from 45 yards or more.
Dabbs had a 53-yard touchdown run on Community’s first offensive play of the game’s opening drive and after an interception by Maki Fleming stopped FMS’ initial drive, Dabbs scored from 48 yards out to make it a 14-0 contest with 1:09 remaining in the first quarter.
FMS put together a 10-play series that was highlighted by a fourth down conversion pass by Rockets’ quarterback Tilden Copeland to Tayton Swift that kept the drive alive.
Five plays after the conversion, Micah McClendon ran it in from the 4-yard line to make it 14-6 and Swift added the two-point conversion run to cut the Community lead to six points with 4:48 remaining in the first half.
A big personal foul penalty by the Rockets on the ensuing kickoff gave the Vikings great field position at the FMS 25-yard line and it didn’t take long for Community to cash in when Dabbs scored from 19 yards out on a fourth down run to make 20-8.
Gavin Garcia added the extra point run and the Rockets tried to mount a scoring drive before the first half ended, but it sputtered out and the Vikings took a 22-8 lead to the locker room.
The Rockets took the second half kickoff and drove down the field despite two holding calls and with 4:51 left in the third quarter, Copeland tossed a 20-yard TD pass to Codi Smith and Brent Burchell added the two-point conversion to make it a 22-16 contest.
All the hard work went for naught as the Vikings came right back with a Dabbs 51-yard touchdown run to give Community a 28-16 lead with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter.
The Vikings’ defense stopped the Rockets’ next drive, but Forrest also held and got the ball back with 5:01 remaining in the contest.
Community (1-1) did not budge and FMS turned the ball over on downs before the Vikings put up six insurance points on a Garcia 21-yard touchdown run with 2:51 left in the game.
Blaine Paschal came up with a turnover for Community to halt the Rockets’ next drive and the game ended two plays later.
Swift had a big game for the Rockets, rushing the ball 16 times for 142 yards and hauling in one Copeland pass for nine yards.
FMS (1-1) travels to Westwood this week and returns home to Murrey E. Holton Memorial Field on August 30 to take on Middle Tennessee Christian School.
