CMS Bulldogs roll over Flintville
Cornersville Middle School hosted the Flintville Bobcats in a throwback game Thursday night at Frog Bottom and it was all Bulldogs from start to finish in a 46-22 win.
The contest was played with a running clock as the Bobby Hurt led officiating crew wanted to stave off any injuries to the Bobcats’ squad that brought just 15 players to Cornersville.
The Bulldogs dominated the game by rushing the football for over 220 yards and scored six touchdowns on the ground.
The only score that did not come from the line of scrimmage was on the opening kickoff when Cornersville’s Ben Franklin electrified the crowd with a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Moments later, Franklin came up big again when he pounced on a loose football on Flintville’s first offensive snap.
Two Mason Calahan runs produced Cornersville’s second touchdown of the game and a 12-0 lead due to missed PAT’s on both scores.
The Bulldog defense held, forcing a Flintville punt that was fielded by Cornersville at the Bobcats’ 46-yard line.
Four plays into the drive, Kale Adcox scored on a 22-yard run and the extra point was no good, making it an 18-0 contest with 1:17 remaining in the second quarter.
On their next drive, the Bobcats got on the board on a second-down-and-three play when quarterback Ben Davis scampered 80 yards for a touchdown and Jackson Mullins added the two-point conversion run to cut the Cornersville lead to 18-8.
The Bulldogs answered quickly when Mason Calahan scored from 48 yards out on the second play of the ensuing drive.
The Frog Bottom defense came up huge on Flintville’s next offensive series when a David Metcalf sack forced a Bobcats’ punt that was returned by Sam Polk to the visitor’s 26-yard line.
Three plays later, Nick Nuenswander scored on a 12-yard run and Calahan added the two-point conversion run to give the Bulldogs a 32-8 lead with 2:02 remaining in the first half.
The Bobcats tried to put some more points on the board before the first half ended, driving to the Cornersville 24-yard line before Davis was sacked for a big loss and time ran out.
On the second half kickoff, Flintville fumbled and Riley Qualls recovered the rock at the Bobcats’ 38-yard line.
After a two-yard run on first down, Skyler Davis rumbled to the Flintville 1-yard line and he got the ball again for the touchdown, making it 38-8 with 5:03 left in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter began with Flintville facing a second-down-and-fourteen at their own 47-yard line.
After an offside penalty on Cornersville, Mullins took off for a 48-yard touchdown and added the two-point conversion to make it a 38-16 ballgame with 5:30 remaining in the game.
Ethan Hollingsworth returned the ensuing kickoff to the Flintville 21-yard line and on the next play, Blake Estes ran to pay dirt and Calahan added the two-point run to give Cornersville a 46-16 lead.
The Bobcats did not give up as they scored on a 46-yard touchdown run by Davis as time ran out.
The Bulldogs will be back in action when they host South Giles Thursday night at Frog Bottom with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m.
