CMS basketball sweeps Culleoka
Cornersville Middle School hosted Culleoka Tuesday night and came away with a sweep with the Lady Bulldogs winning a close 34-27 contest before the Bulldogs blew out the Warriors 46-7.
Grayson Riner opened up the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with a short jumper and Vallie Stanfill matched the bucket for the Lady Warriors.
Cornersville scored six straight as Alicia Polk, who led all scorers in the game with 13 points, got off to a hot start for the Lady Bulldogs as she scored four points, bookending a pair of buckets around a Jesse Woodard basket to make it an 8-2 ballgame.
Culleoka came back to make it 8-6 before Woodard came up with a rebound and put-back, and after a Culleoka missed shot, Polk was fouled and went to the free throw line where she made both attempts.
Maci McKennon had a chance to make a pair of late free throws for the Lady Warriors, but managed one of two from the charity stripe and the first quarter ended with Cornersville in front 12-7.
Stanfill and Polk traded baskets to begin the second period before Annabelle Mulliniks rained home a 3-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs to make it a 17-9 contest.
After a basket by each team, Mulliniks scored again to open up a 10-point lead for CMS at 21-11 before one free throw by McKennon at the end of the period cut Culleoka’s halftime deficit to 21-12.
The Lady Warriors cut the deficit to five on back-to-back baskets by Stanfill and McKennon before Anna Wood scored her lone bucket of the game for Cornersville to open up a seven-point lead at 23-16.
There was no scoring for several minutes until Stanfill came up with a bucket in the paint for Culleoka and a few possessions later, McKennon made it a three-point contest with a short jumper.
Woodard made two-of-two from the free throw line for Cornersville to halt the Culleoka rally.
One free throw by Emma Parks late in the period cut the Cornersville lead to 25-21, entering the fourth quarter.
Polk rained home a 3-pointer at the outset of the period to make it a seven-point game, but once again the Lady Warriors fought back and eventually sliced the Cornersville lead to a single digit at 28-27 on a three-point play in the paint by Stanfill with 1:55 remaining in the contest.
A missed shot by Culleoka led to a Cornersville timeout with 1:01 left to play and Mulliniks came up with a huge rebound and put-back for the Lady Bulldogs.
Another missed Culleoka field goal led to the final basket of the contest as Woodard scored for Cornersville, who sweated out the big 34-27 win.
The boys game was never a contest as a 9-2 Cornersville lead at the end of the first quarter ballooned to 19-2 at the half.
A 25-point third quarter by the Bulldogs made it 44-7 and with all the subs on the floor in the fourth period, Cornersville scored one point and Culleoka scored zero for the 46-7 final score.
Mason Calahan led all scorers with 14 points, while Caden White added eight, Kale Adcox netted seven, David Metcalf scored six, Skyler Davis had five, Bradden Hickman four, and Jake Welch rounded out the balanced scoring attack for the Bulldogs with a deuce.
