Turner lifts CMS Lady Dawgs over LMS
The CMS Lady Bulldogs completed the intra-county season series sweep over the LMS Tigerettes with a 23-14 win at Cornersville Thursday night.
Cornersville’s Gracie Turner dominated the game in the low post, scoring a game-high 14 points, while making it difficult for the Tigerettes to get many points in the paint.
Turner scored two points in the first and fourth quarters, four in the second, and all six of the Lady Bulldogs’ points in the pivotal third period when Cornersville pulled away.
The Lady Bulldogs held the Tigerettes under five points in all four quarters.
Jessie Woodard had four points for CMS, Annabelle Mulliniks nailed one 3-pointer, and Anna Wood added a deuce.
Reagan Cope and Dorian Haislip had four points apiece for the Tigerettes, while Mallory Woodward chipped in with three, Kayla Keiler added two, and Demiyah Blackman rounded out the LMS scoring with one marker.
A low scoring first period ended with the scored tied at 4-4 before the Lady Dawgs went on a big 9-0 run in the second quarter, beginning with a steal by Mia Gross, who fed Turner for the bucket.
Turner scored on an inbounds play at the 3:42 mark, and moments later Wood swiped the rock and made two free throws after being fouled to make it a 10-4 contest.
A Lewisburg missed field goal turned into a Mulliniks 3-pointer at the other end for Cornersville as they opened up a nine-point lead.
Cope came up with one free throw for LMS to break the run and Haislip scored on a drive to the hoop at the end of the first half to bring LMS to within six points at 13-7 at the break.
Turner turned it on in third period with six points in the low post and Woodward scored all three points for Lewisburg in the stanza as the Lady Bulldogs took a 19-10 lead to the fourth quarter.
Turner added the first two points of the final period when she converted both ends of a one-and-one opportunity from the free throw line to make it 21-10 and moments later, Turner made a nice inside pass to Woodard for the last basket in the game for the Lady Bulldogs.
A Haislip drive to the hoop and score and a Cope basket were the only four points scored by the Tigerettes in the period as CMS took the win.
