Lewisburg honors employees
Service awards took center stage on Thursday afternoon at the monthly meeting of the Lewisburg City Council.
Twenty three city employees were recognized for service milestones with the city, ranging from five to 25 years of employment.
Those honored are pictured along with this story.
Councilmen also approved a resolution honoring Col. Wayne Coomes, who served as both the city’s police and fire chief after his retirement from the Marine Corps.
Coomes was unable to attend the meeting, but the council hopes to present the recognition to him at next months meeting.
During the citizen comment period, Greg York appeared before the council to speak regarding a December incident in which he alleges excessive use of force by members of the Lewisburg Police Department.
“The city is ultimately going to pay for what I’ve been through,” he said in his statement to the council.
York said the incident left him with facial fractures
The incident is still under investigation.
Councilmen approved a resolution that would add the mayor and a councilman to the city’s budget committee. Lewisburg’s charter is unusual among municipalities in that it did not include elected officials during the drawing up of an annual budget for the city.
The council also deferred two items that might have had a financial impact on the city until the spring, when the city’s financial situation should be more clear.
One resolution would have changed the personnel policy to make employees eligible for three weeks of vacation after five years of service instead of the current eight years.
The other would have committed an estimated $15,000 to $20,000 toward the renovation of the restrooms at the Babe Ruth baseball field, in order to make the facility more competitive when bidding for regional tournaments.
