Number one Eagleville blasts Bulldogs
The Eagleville Eagles (19-3, 5-1) brought their number-one ranking in 1A and the number five leading scorer in the state, Ryley McClaran (24.3 points per game), to face the Cornersville (8-9, 2-4) Bulldogs in a District 8-A matchup.
The Eagles showed why they had the top billing as they rolled over the Bulldogs 69-37 with McClaran getting his average (24) points.
The Bulldogs, without the services of Tyler Wolaver, who will miss several more games with a bad ankle had to man up to stay with the Eagleville crew.
The opening tip was controlled by Eagleville and Mari Stoudemire took the first shot and missed, but in a scramble for a rebound the ball was tipped in by a Bulldog to make it 2-0.
The unlucky break was an omen for how the game went for the Bulldogs.
Stoudemire did not miss the next time, scoring a basket and on the Eagles next possession, a basket by McClaran put them up 4-0.
A Marquis Martin basket cut the lead in half for the Bulldogs.
The Eagles began their flight with McClaran and Stoudemire carrying the load as Stoudemire scored a basket and a free throw, while McClaran scored four points.
Cameron Whitaker broke the drought for Cornersville with a basket, followed by a steal and a layup that showcased his quickness.
Another Stoudemire free throw and a slight kiss off the backboard by McClaran put a three on the board and the quarter ended with Eagleville in front 17-6.
The second quarter had hardly begun when a technical foul on the Eagleville bench was called that resulted in two free throws sunk by Alexander Stewart.
The call did not faze the Eagles, who proceeded to showcase Numi Davenport, who promptly scored a basket and back-to-back 3-pointers before Whitaker answered with a three for the Bulldogs.
Stoudemire dropped in another basket off an offensive rebound and McClaran scored two baskets, one on a drive as he outran the Bulldogs’ defense.
Vari Robinson got in on the act with a basket before Trey Luna scored for Cornersville to break up the Eagles’ onslaught.
Whitaker banged home another 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs trailed by 20 at the half, 36-16.
The third quarter began and it was more of the same for the Eagles as McClaran glided along the baseline to knock down two more points.
The Bulldogs got baskets on a Stewart jumper and an inside shot by Martin, but Davenport heated up with three 3-pointers in the quarter that put any hope of a comeback to rest for the Bulldogs
Despite the big deficit, Cornersville kept up their battle as Luna scored on a reverse layup proving this young man does not back down.
Bryce Woodard nailed a basket at the buzzer, but the Eagles increased their lead to 57-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Luna bagged a basket to begin the fourth and Whitaker added a two-pointer for the Bulldogs before Tyler Martin scored two for the Eagles as the subs came in.
Robinson made three free throws after being fouled and the Eagles continued their flight.
Luna struck again as he made a bucket and a 3-pointer to cap off a good night.
Pickett made a free throw as would Robinson for the Eagles and the game ended.
Whitaker scored 13 points to lead the Bulldogs in the scoring column, while Luna netted 11, Martin and Stewart had four 4, Eli Woodard and Bryce Woodard both added a deuce, and Pickett had one marker.
