Friday night’s game at Cornersville saw the Eagleville Lady Eagles (14-8, 5-1) and the hometown Lady Bulldogs (9-13, 1-6) square off in a District 8-A contest.

The Lady Bulldog’s youth, inexperience, and growing pains were evident in a 44-25 loss.

The Lady Eagles were hoping to keep pace with Cascade for the top spot in district standings and they did as both teams finished the night with 5-1 league marks.

The tip-off controlled by Eagleville resulted in a missed shot and a Bulldog rebound, but a block by Lizzy Thompson gave the ball back to Eagleville

Caley Whitley popped a three and after a Cornersville missed field goal, Thompson dropped a basket and the lead was 5-0.

A free throw by Abbie Woodard put the Lady Bulldogs on the board.

The Lady Bulldogs were trying to adjust to the 2-3 zone that Eagleville was using and a basket by Sarah Beth Prosser, courtesy of a great feed by Alicia Polk was all the points the Lady Bulldogs could muster in the first quarter.

Makala Moates made two 3-pointers and Anna Grace Clement added a free throw for Eagleville and at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles led 12-3.

The second quarter began with Cornersville fighting back via baskets by Bethany Fitzgerald, Prosser, and a 3-pointer by Polk to offset a basket by Clement and the lead was 14-10.

Clement and Polk traded baskets with Polk’s being a quick baseline drive.

Moates hit two more 3-pointers and another free throw by Clement pushed the lead to 23-12.

Polk fired up a long 3-pointer and Eagleville held a 23-15 halftime lead.

Baskets by Moates and Ferguson pushed it out to 29-15 at the 3:41 mark of the period.

A three by Ferguson and a free throw by Clement padded the lead for Eagleville until a 3-pointer by Merihannah Walker kept the Lady Bulldogs from being held scoreless in the third quarter.

After three quarters Eagleville led 33-18 and a put-back by Woodard opened Cornersville’s scoring in the fourth quarter. The sophomore showed flashes of a great basketball talent for the Lady Bulldogs and along with Polk, those two are building for the future.

Moates kept up her hot-hand with a basket and Clement added two free throws before Prosser contributed two from the charity stripe for the home team.

Woodard scored on a good move inside for Cornersville, then Moates had a shot blocked, but in the scramble for the ball, Moates picked it up and scored for Eagleville.

Eagleville added to their score when Ferguson scored a basket and Thompson added a free throw.
