Veteran services focus of Wednesday event

Marshall County veterans will again have the opportunity to access services in one location next Wednesday.

Columbia State is hosting the Marshall County Veteran Outreach event on their Lewisburg campus on March 6 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The event, Veteran Service Day, will offer several resources for veterans and their families in one place.

Marshall County Mayor Mike Keny will present a proclamation, at the 9 a.m. ceremony opening the day, marking the week of March 4 as Veteran Services Week in the county.

Representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs will be on hand to answer benefits questions and to train vets on the use of the My HealtheVet website

Several local veteranís service oganizations will be on hand, including the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The Tennessee National Guard J9 program, offering programs supporting military families, will also be in attendence.

The Department of Labor will have specialists in veteran employment present and Talos Engineering and Teledyne will be taking applications for employment as well.

Information will be available on the TN Reconnect program and TCAT Pulaski for veterans wishing to explore post-secondary educational opportunities, and representatives of Lipscomb Universityís Veterans Program will also be on hand.

Veterans can bring their DD-214 form and the county Register of Deeds will register the form in their office.

Of paricular interest is a program, under the auspices of the Library of Congress, to collect and preserve veterans accounts of their time in service. Local volunteers conducting the program will be on site to provide more information.

Marshall Medical Center will have their mobile medical screening van on site to offer free medical screening tests for cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and bone density.

Maury Regional will also offer classes on diabetes risk factors at both 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The medical screening and classes are open to the public as well.
