Rockets rout Eagles, sweep Single A Classic
The Forrest Rockets came away with a three-game sweep in the annual Single A Classic at Chapel Hill last weekend, beginning with a big 11-1 six-inning, run-rule win over Jackson Christian School.
The Rockets banged out 12 hits in the contest and gave winning pitcher Cody Sisk all the runs he needed thanks to a five-run first inning.
Brett Burnham, Max Kirby, Grayson Whaley, Cannon Cervantes, and Sisk all had two base hits apiece in the contest with the big blows coming on a Cervantes three-run double in the first inning and a Kirby two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Sisk had an RBI double and single at the plate to go along with a solid five-inning, four-hit performance on the mound as he struck out five and walked two Eagles’ batters.
Freshman Kain Moses came on in the top of the sixth inning and struck out two out of the three batters he faced to seal the win for the Rockets.
Forrest’s lone error in the game gave the Eagles a baserunner with two outs in the first inning, but Sisk induced a fly ball to Cervantes in center field to squash the threat.
Burnham led off the home half of the frame with a double to left field and Kirby followed with an RBI single and went all the way to third base on an errant throw.
Ethan Mealer made it 2-0 with a fielder’s choice RBI and Blaize Sweeney reached on an error.
Whaley roped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third before Spence Oliver was hit by a pitch to load the sacks full of Rockets.
Cervantes drilled a double to the center field fence, clearing the bases to make it a 5-0 contest.
Sisk retired the side in order in the second and third innings and in the bottom of the third, Sisk helped himself out with a two-out, RBI double for a six-run lead.
Chance King singled to lead off the top of the fourth inning for Jackson Christian before Sisk struck out the next three Eagles to send the game to the home half of the fourth.
Burnham reached on an infield error to lead off the inning and Kirby followed with a moon shot over the left field fence, making it an 8-0 ballgame.
Sisk’s only blemish of the contest came with one out in the top of the fifth inning when Danya Brooks hit a solo home run to left field.
The Rockets added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Sisk and Burnham.
Moses came to hill in the top of the sixth and recorded out number one on a ground out to Burnham at short before a single by King extended the inning.
The big freshman righty ended the game in style, whiffing back-to-back batters to seal the win.
The Rockets opened up Saturday’s action at Forrest with a 12-7 win over Trousdale County before beating defending Class A runner-up Loretto 9-6.
Loretto won the title in 2016-2017.
