Bulldogs complete sweep over Champions
The Cascade Champions (3-6, 2-1) came calling on a sunny Tuesday afternoon to play the second game of a two-game, District 8-A series with the host Cornersville Bulldogs (10-2, 3-0).
The Bulldogs spotted the Champions a three-run lead, but behind two home run blasts by Caleb Crowell and a bases clearing double by Cameron Whitaker, Cornersville swept the series and the game by a score of 8-4.
The Champions struck first when Cole Whitson led off the game with a single, then scooted home as Matthew Pilkington lined a double through the gap in left/center field that rolled to the fence.
After an error put two men on base, Bulldog starting pitcher Carson Stacy escaped further damage by getting a comebacker to the mount and threw out Tyler Knight. Cascade 1, Bulldogs coming to bat.
Cornersville tried to respond with two outs when Crowell banged a two-bagger, but he was left stranded as the Bulldogs could not bring him around.
Stacy cruised through the second inning.
The Bulldogs could do little against Cascade starter Seth Smith in the second as they went three-up, three-down.
Stacy, after cruising through the second ran into trouble in the top of the third as Whitson again led off with a single to left before Colby Melson doubled him to third and he came home on an error.
Melson then came home on a fielder’s choice and after two and a half innings, it was Cascade 3, Bulldogs 0.
In the bottom of the inning the Bulldogs could do little against Smith again going three-up, three-down.
Stacy hung tough in the top of the fourth as his curve ball began to catch the corner.
“I couldn’t get it (curve) down, I finally got it so they were swinging around it,” Stacey said.
The Bulldogs finally caught up with Smith in the bottom of the fourth.
Crowell slammed a pitch over the left field fence and the Bulldogs were on the board.
Graham Duke coaxed a walk and after one out, Tilden Jackson got aboard on an error.
Eli Woodard then slapped a single to left to score Duke and the Bulldogs trailed 3-2.
Tyler Wolaver loaded the bases on an error, setting the stage for Cameron Whitaker.
Whitaker, after battling a nine pitch at bat, slammed a ball to the base of the fence in left for a bases clearing double and the Bulldogs were up 5-3.
Whitaker said of his at bat, “I was battling to try and get us some runs.”
“Cameron’s at-bat was nine pitches and was a big boost for the team,” Cornersville coach Ben Putnam said.
Whitaker’s blast and a walk to Wolaver chased Smith and Cascade’s Austin Harden came in to pitch to get the third out and halt the Bulldogs.
Raymond Cooksey came on in relief of Stacy and although giving up two bases on balls, shut down the Champions in the top of the fifth.
The Bulldogs threatened again in the bottom of the fifth when Cooksey drew a walk and Luke Terry came in to pinch run for the Bulldog hurler.
Two Cascade errors put Terry at third with the bases loaded and two outs.
Harden bore down and ended the threat with a strikeout.
The Champions put two runners on in the top of the sixth, but Cooksey pitched around it and Cascade could not score.
The bottom of the sixth saw the Bulldogs strike again with Crowell providing the firepower.
Whitaker opened with a single, Wolaver followed with a hit, and Crowell blasted a 3-1 pitch for his second home run of the game, this time for three runs.
The Champions tried to mount a comeback with a one-out double by Knight and a two-out double by Harden to plate a run.
Whitson nailed a sharply hit ball to Wolaver at shortstop, which was gobbled up and thrown to first for the final out.
