Bulldogs complete sweep over Hornets

Friday, April 12, 2019

The Huntland Hornets came to play the second game of a home and away District 8-A series with the host Cornersville Bulldogs on a beautiful spring afternoon that was perfect for baseball.

The Bulldogs, behind the pitching of Carson Stacy and the hitting of Raymond Cooksey easily topped the Hornets by a score of 9-3.

Carson gave up an opening single by Bryson Turner, but retired the next two batters before running into trouble when an error and a hit batsman loaded the bases.

Stacy got out of the jam when Bryson Turner grounded to second baseman Tyler Wolaver, who fielded it and threw on to first for the third out.

In the bottom of the first inning the sixth-ranked Bulldogs took advantage of Kolbi Stewart’s wildness as Cam Whitaker walked, then promptly stole second and wound up on third on a wild pitch.

Caleb Crowell drew a walk and Luke Terry came in to run for Crowell before Graham Duke drove home Whitaker with a single to right field.

A Raymond Cooksey hit to left field scored Terry and Duke.

Eli Woodard drove home Cooksey and Tilden Jackson who had drawn a walk for a 1-0 Cornersville lead.

Stacy gave up a single to Will Jolley but his defense backed him up and the Bulldogs shut the Hornets down in the top of the second.

“I’m still struggling with my curveball,” Stacey said.

The Bulldogs went quietly in the second and in the third inning the Bulldogs defense shined again on a sparking throw by right fielder Blake Pickett that nailed a Hornet runner attempting to stretch a double out of a single.

The defense also turned a pretty 6-4-3 double play to end the Hornets top of the fourth.

The bottom of the fourth saw Huntland change pitchers with Brandon Yarborough replacing Stewart.

Woodard drew a walk, but was erased on a fielder’s choice and Connor McVey was safe at first.

A base hit by Pickett and a walk to Whitaker loaded the bases.

Wolaver lifted a sacrifice fly RBI to right that scored McVey and Pickett scored on a wild throw by Huntland catcher trying to get him at third and Whitaker followed him home.

Crowell drew a walk and Luke Terry ran for him and promptly stole second.

Duke then was hit by a pitch and Terry came home on a fielder’s choice.

At the end of four the scores was Cornersville 9, Huntland 0.

Huntland battled back in the fifth on an error to score a run on a bases on balls and a base hit by Millraney, who was thrown out trying to stretch a single to a double for the third out.

Huntland placed two runners on in the sixth but could not bring them home.

Cam Whitaker came in to relieve Stacy in the top of the seventh and although the Hornets touched him for a two singles and a double for two runs he retired the side on a come backer to the mound and the Bulldogs (14-2) improved to 6-0 in District 8-A play as they remained tied with Eagleville for first place.

“I’m confident in our guys and we got a district win,” Cornersville coach Ben Putnam said. “We can always do better and not be caught up in where we’re ranked.”
