Forrest’s Ashely Milligan got her first start in the circle at the Field of Dreams in Chapel Hill Wednesday night and ‘Big Red’ made the most of it, tossing a five-inning no-hitter as the Lady Rockets run-ruled Cornersville 12-0.

“She has been throwing well all year and probably hadn’t got the opportunities she’s worked hard enough to get,” Forrest coach Shelby Stinnett said. “We are still trying to give her some shots and when she comes out and throws like that, she’ll get more.”

Milligan, who struck out 11 Lady Dawgs, just missed a perfect game as she gave up a lone base on balls to Haley Hagan in the top of the third inning.

“I was really excited, but I came out strong and did really good,” Milligan said. “I wanted to start strong and stay strong all the way through.”

“Most of my pitches were rise balls and they rose right under their bats and they couldn’t get a hold of them.”

Milligan faced 15 batters in the contest and had just three putouts in the field, all on fly balls.

Bethel University signee Kayla Gillespie slams her first high school home run in the big seven-run second inning for the Lady Rockets.

The Lady Rockets banged out 10 hits, including a three-run home run by Bethel University signee Kayla Gillespie in a seven-run second inning and a solo shot by Karley Daughrity in a four-run third.

Anna Blanton and Daughrity had two hits apiece in the game while Jenna Blanton, Kaitlin Leverette, Milligan, Kiersten Blalock, Kayla Gillespie, and Caroline Warner all had one base knock apiece.

“We knew coming in the past few weeks we haven’t gotten as many hits as we think we should or with the talent we got, so this week coach Rick (Ricky Stinnett) has really been working hard individually one-on-one with the hitting and it is really paying off,” Stinnett said.

Forrest also had huge game on the base paths, stealing nine bags with courtesy runner Sayrna Kurtz swiping four, including a theft of home in the second inning.

Jenna Blanton, Anna Blanton, Ally Blanton, Addison Bunty, and Zoe Long all had one theft apiece.

Karley Daughrity is all smiles as she rounds third base and gets ready for some knuckles with Forrest coach Shelby Stinnett.

Forrest sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and scored seven times on Gillespie’s three-run dinger, an RBI double by Daughrity, plus a two-run single by Milligan.

The Lady Rockets added four runs to their total in the bottom of the third on Daughrity’s solo blast, an Anna Blanton RBI double, and a Bunty steal of home.

Aleia Childress was the workhorse in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs, who fell 12-0 to Forrest on Wednesday at Chapel Hill.

The Lady Bulldogs went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth inning and in the home half of the frame, Warner knocked in Blalock for the final tally of the contest.

Milligan finished the no-no with authority, striking out the side in order to end the game.

The Lady Rockets (15-1, 4-0) travelled to Murfreesboro Central Magnet last night for a District 12-AA contest and play in the annual Brentwood Invitational at Crockett Park in Brentwood today and tomorrow.

“We do play Creek Wood, so we get to see them and hopefully again down the road, so that will be a good matchup,” Stinnett said. “Also for us hitting-wise, we will get to see some good pitching and we get in these tournament to see that type of pitching, so hopefully we’ve geared up and still working on that and we can have some good games.”

Creek Wood ended the Lady Rockets’ season last year when they came to Chapel Hill and handed them a 6-5 loss in the first round of the Region 6-AA Tournament.
