Rockets drop first winner’s bracket final to Indians
Forrest faced the Sequatchie County Indians in the winner’s bracket finals during the Spring Fling XXVI Spring Sports Championships 2A baseball Tournament at Smyrna on Thursday with a win sending the Rockets to the championship and loss meaning the two teams face off again for a chance to face Covington for the title at MTSU on Friday.
The Rockets bats were silenced as the Indians toughed out a 6-1 win, breaking a two-game winning streak by Forrest and force the do or die game.
Cannon Cervantes was hit by a pitch from Sequatchie County’s Ethan Seals with one out in the top of the first inning before Seals got the second out and then proceeded to hit the next three batters, Blaize Sweeney, Grayson Whaley, and Ethan Mealer to score Cervantes for the first run of the game.
The Rockets were unable to move anymore runners along and left the bases loaded.
The Indians faced off against the Rockets’ Grayson Whaley, pitching his first game in the tournament.
With one out, Collin Hudson got aboard on an error at shortstop and moved to second on the throw-a-way, but Whaley caught Hudson leaning and he was tagged out in a rundown for out number two to squash the early threat.
Burnham doubled to left field with two outs in the top of the second inning and Cannon Cervantes got aboard via an error by the Indians shortstop Hudson as Burnham advanced to third.
Max Kirby walked to load the bases and the Indians made a pitching change, bringing in left hander Sergio Camp, who got a groundout to shortstop to end the inning with the score still 1-0.
In the first two innings, six Rocket runners were left on base and as the game progressed their failure to score loomed large.
In the home half of the frame, Trevor Ritchie led off with a single then stole second base, but Whaley bore down and got the next three batters out in a row to end the inning.
Forrest went in order in the top of the third.
Sequatchie County got to Whaley in the bottom of the third.
“I couldn’t focus in,” said Whaley, “We’ve got another opportunity, so hopefully we’ll get going.”
Back-to-back walks to Swanger and Potts, then a balk moved the runners to second and third with no outs.
Whaley got an out before Hudson lined a two-run single to center field, putting the Indians up 2-1.
Hudson stole second base and Bodie Terry grounded a single up the middle to move Hudson to third.
A fly ball caught by Kirby in shallow right field was enough to score Ritchie and at the end of three the Indians led 3-1.
There was no scoring in the fourth inning and in the bottom of the fifth, Sequatchie County struck again as Logan Potts and Kolyn Cooper led off with back-to-back singles, enabling courtesy runner Tyler Boston to advance to third.
Whaley got a double play grounder, but Boston scored on the play to make it 4-1.
In the top of the sixth, Spence Oliver’s single was the only base runner for the Rockets and he was left stranded.
The Indians added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs thanks to a HBP and an error.
Caden Swanger walked to load the bases and Potts drove a single up the middle to score two Indian runners that increased the lead to 6-1after six innings.
The Rockets went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh and the Indians had forced the do or die game to see which team will play for the 2A state championship.
“We just didn’t play our game but we’ll get it back and get the job done,” Forrest coach Bart Joyce said.
