A-Plus picks off win over Marshall Medical Center
A-Plus Collision Center avoided a bad wreck in the opening game Thursday night at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before hanging on for a an 6-5 win over Marshall Medical Center (MMC).
Both teams had nine hits in the contest with Caleb McElhaney coming up with a 3-for-4 night for A-Plus and Riley Durbin matching that performance for MMC.
McElhaney also picked up the win on the mound for A-Plus and Jace McPherson earned a save when he escaped a bases loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh when the game ended in the weirdest of ways on a pickoff at first base.
McElhaney went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking three.
Davin Miles took the loss for MMC, but pitched well, tossing five innings of seven-hit ball.
Miles gave up five runs (three earned), striking out eight and walking six.
Daniel Sellars led off the ballgame with a base hit and Trey Warner reached on an MMC error to put runners on the corners.
Sellars scooted home with the gameís first run on a passed ball and after a groundout that sent Warner to third, Carson Cheek picked up a sacrifice fly RBI in a pickup role for A-Plus.
McElhaney tossed a 1-2-3 first inning and came back with another one in the bottom of the second after A-Plus failed to push a run a across in the top of the inning when they had two runners on base.
A-Plus made it a 5-0 contest in the top of third with Cheek and McPherson coming up with RBI singles and another run came home on a passed ball.
Miles pitched a scoreless fourth inning when he escaped a second and third two-out jam on a pickoff at third base.
MMC finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, beginning with a one out walk to Miles, who promptly stole second base.
Durbin followed with an RBI double and after a walk to McPherson, Caleb Christmas executed a perfect squeeze bunt to make it a 5-2 contest.
A-Plus left two more runners stranded in the top of the fifth inning and in the bottom of the frame, Miles struck out the side in order for MMC.
Warner made it a 6-2 game when he drove home Sellars on a sacrifice fly RBI in the top of the sixth and A-Plus continued its good luck when MMC left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning.
Ashton Grubbs tossed a 1-2-3 top of the seventh in the relief role for MMC and A-Plus mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the inning when Austin Kelley drew a one-out base on balls.
Grubbs followed with a double to right field to put runners on second and third and Shane Hay was issued an intentional walk to load the sacks.
A-Plus got the second out on a force play at home before Durbin came up with his third hit of the game to drive in Grubbs, making it a one-run game.
On a 3-2 count with McPherson at the plate, Durbin wandered off first base and was picked off by A-Plus pickup catcher Micah Riddle to end the game.
