Elks score late night win over Nichirin
The second game of Thursday night’s Marshall County Babe Ruth League twin bill was a high scoring affair with the Elks coming away with a 10-9 win over Nichirin on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Elks banged out 12 hits in the contest as Carson Cheek led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
Thomas Beech, Kyrklinn Wunderlin, and Devin Wiser all had two hits apiece while Bryce Tankersley, Ashton Grubbs, and Micah Riddle all had one base knock each.
Cheek picked up the win in relief, tossing three no-hit innings while striking out eight and walking two Nichirin batters.
Rob Hawkins went five innings on the mound for Nichirin, giving up five earned runs while striking out two and walking three.
After Elks’ starting pitcher Thomas Beech escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning the Elks put up four runs in the home half of the inning.
Wiser beat out an infield single to start the stanza and that was the only base hit in the inning as Nichirin booted the ball around with three errors.
Nichirin failed to score in the top of the second and the Elks added another run in the bottom of the frame via an RBI single by Beech.
Nichirin got things going offensively in the top of the third as they plated four runs on an RBI triple by John Morgan Thomas and a squeeze bunt RBI by Hawkins.
The Elks helped them out by committing a pair of errors in the inning.
Hawkins set down the Elks 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third and then Nichirin took a 9-5 lead when they posted a four-run fourth inning and only had one hit, a leadoff double by Reid Mitchell.
Bryce Tankersley faced three batters in the frame and they all reached base before Cheek came on to minimize the damage.
The Elks closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 9-8 contest on a two-run triple by Cheek and a run-scoring single by Tankersley.
Cheek struck out the side in order in the top of the fifth and Hawkins did not allow a run in the bottom of the inning.
Cheek had another strong inning in the top of the sixth, whiffing two out of three batters he faced.
Wunderlin led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit and Cheek and Beech followed with singles to load the bases for Riddle, who lined a shot up the middle that was misplayed for the game winner.
