Rowland triple breaks Elks’ winning streak
Marshall Medical Center (MMC) got its revenge Tuesday night with a big 7-3 win over archrival Elks in the first game of Marshall County Babe Ruth League doubleheader at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth League Field in Lewisburg.
It was the first loss of the season for the Elks (3-1) who had just five hits off two MMC pitchers and held a 3-0 second inning lead, but never scored again in the contest.
MMC evened its record to 2-2 behind a solid hitting attack led by Cova Rowland, who went 2-for-3 and provided the backbreaking blow when he drilled a bases loaded triple that cleared the sacks in a go-ahead four-run, fifth inning.
Austin Kelley picked up the win on the mound, coming on for starter Beau Schillig in the third inning.
Kelley gave up zero runs and allowed just one hit while striking out three and walking none in three innings of work before Cova Rowland came to the hill and pitched the final two innings to earn the save. Rowland also gave up one hit and struck out three and walked two Elks’ batters.
Shane Hay (3B, RBI, 2RS, BB, SB), Davin Miles (RBI, 2RS, BB, SB), and Kelley (RS, SB) all had one hit apiece for MMC.
Carson Cheek (two 2Bs, RBI, SB) and Garrett Mead (2B, RS) went 2-for-3 and Hayden Dawson (RBI) posted one hit for the Elks.
The Elks got on the board in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Cheek and they added a third run in the top of the second on a Dawson RBI that scored Mead, who had doubled leading off the stanza.
Meanwhile, Elks’ starting pitcher Tristan Griggs was sailing along on the mound as he retired the first nine batters he faced (7 strikeouts) in the game until running into fourth inning trouble.
Ashton Grubbs reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the fourth and Hay followed with an RBI double to get MMC on the scoreboard.
Miles walked and took off for a steal of second and the throw to try to catch him was wild and Hay came home to make it 3-2.
Cova Rowland followed with the game tying double and it could have been much worse for MMC, but an inning ending double play sent the game to fifth inning tied at 3.
Kelley kept MMC off the board in the top of the frame and MMC took the lead in the home half of the inning as Kelley got the rally going with a one-out base hit to right field.
Kelley stole second before Tristan Braden was hit by a pitch.
Wunderlin, who came on for Griggs in the fourth, struck out the next MMC batter before intentionally walking Hay to load the bases.
Miles grounded a ball in the 6-5 hole and beat the throw to first for the go-ahead RBI and Cova Rowland followed with a shot that landed on the left field chalk and all three runners scored easily, making it 7-3 contest.
McPherson came to the hill in relief of Kelley in the top of the sixth and walked Thomas Beech with one out, but a line drive to Miles at first base resulted in an inning ending double play.
MMC went down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth and the Elks had two-on with two outs in the bottom of the sixth before Miles caught a pop-up at first to end the game on the two-hour time limit rule.
