Elks beat A-Plus with one hit

It was a classic matchup at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in the first game of Tuesday night’s twin bill at Lewisburg with the Elks taking on A-Plus Collision Center.

The Elks had just one hit in the contest, coming from their last batter in the game as Jacob Mayberry lashed a run-scoring single.

Tanner Mullins tossed a four inning, two-hit gem, surrendering zero runs while walking three and striking out 10 A-Plus batters in the contest.

Grayson Miller started on the mound for A-Plus and blanked the Elks in the first inning before moving to shortstop.

Mullins set down A-Plus 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning before the Elks pushed across a run in the top of the third inning when Jayce Shillig walked, went to second on a passed ball, took third on a wild pitch, and then scored on another passed ball.

Kasen Fuller led off the bottom of the second with a base hit, but Mullins slammed the door as he whiffed the next three A-Plus batters in order.

The Elks scored two unearned runs in the top of the third inning to make it 3-0 and in the bottom of the frame, A-Plus got two runners on with one out as Caleb Christmas reached on a leadoff walk and Sellars beat out an infield single.

Once again, Mullins reared back and struck out the next two A-Plus batters, sending the game to the fourth inning.

Mullins led off the inning with a base on balls, stole second, and came around to score on a ball four error.

A-Plus threatened again the home half of the inning as Fuller and Jace McPherson drew back-to-back leadoff walks off Mullins.

They ended up on second and third with no outs when Mullins slammed the door closed again on a pair of strikeouts and a grounder back to the mound.

Jackson Wells walked with one out in the top of the fifth inning and Beech made it first and second with another base on balls.

An A-plus error loaded the bases and Connor Jones drove in Wells with a fielder’s choice RBI before Mayberry laced an RBI single to centerfield to make it 6-0, but Jones was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Beech came to the hill in the bottom of the inning and struck out the first A-Plus batter before they rallied, beginning with a double by Sellars.

An error, a hit batsman, and a run-scoring single by Fuller made it 6-3 and after another hit batsman, a wild pitch scored Fuller, making it a 6-4 contest.

Beech had enough as he whiffed the next batter for out number two and the game ended on a grounder back to the mound.
