The Marshall County Babe Ruth League opened up its season Friday night a little behind the predetermined time after the fully committed Maury County team decided not to play at the last minute.

Undeterred, Beavers’ lefty Hayden Duke fired the first pitch of the season to Gamecocks’ leadoff batter Peyton Graves at 7 p.m. to kick off a doubleheader between the two remaining 16-18 year-old squads at the Jonathon D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth League Field in Lewisburg.

Graves grounded out to second baseman Tilden Jackson and Duke went on to pitch a scoreless first inning.

Bryson Hammons started on the mound for the Gamecocks and got Connor Cervantes out on a grounder to Preston Shelton at shortstop before Luke Terry came up with an infield single.

Terry went on to steal second and third base, but Hammons slammed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Jackson walked to lead off the top of the second inning and Duke moved the runner up with a ground out to Cheek at first base.

A third strike got away from catcher Austin Grubbs and the Beavers had runners at the corners with one out.

Hammons got out of another jam when he fielded a grounder back to mound and threw to Shelton at short and he made the pivot and fired to Cheek at first for the inning ending double play.

Logan McKnight led off the bottom the frame and a wild throw on grounder went in to right field and McKnight rumbled in to third.

Braden Bowyer came up with a fielder’s choice RBI to open the scoring and after a base on balls to Graves, Thomas J. Beardsley came to the hill and got the final two outs to end the inning.

The Beavers failed to score with a couple of batters reaching base in the bottom of the third inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, Shelton reached on an infield single and Cheek was hit by a pitch before Logan Courtemanche drilled an RBI single to right field.

Grubbs singled to short right field to load the bases and after a strikeout, Caleb Grooms was hit by a pitch to drive in Cheek to make it 3-0.

The Beavers came back in the home half of the frame as Walker Whaley reached on an error to lead off the inning and stole second and third base before Caleb McElhaney walked.

McKnight came on in relief and Jackson drove in Whaley on a fielder’s choice RBI and Colton Barber made 4-2 on another ground ball out.

McKnight escaped without allowing any more runs and the Gamecocks added another run in the top of the fifth inning for a 5-2 lead.

The Beavers had runners on second and third after a pair of base on balls and couple of stolen bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, but McKnight got a pop-up to first and a grounder to third to put out the fire.

The Gamecocks failed to score in the top of the sixth and Courtemanche came to the hill in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After a pop-up to second for the first out, Jackson singled to left field and Barber followed with a base hit to right field to put runners on first and third with one out.

Naomi Hopper came in to pinch run at first base, but was thrown out at second, trying to steal.

A wild throw back to the pitcher allowed Jackson to score from third base to make it 5-3 before Courtemanche came up with a game-ending strikeout.

In the second game of the twin bill, the Beavers fell behind 6-2 before tying the game with a big four-run fourth inning with the big blows coming on back-to-back doubles by Jackson and Barber.

Hopper singlehandedly put the Beavers in front in the top of the fifth inning as she walked with one out, went to third on an error and scored on a passed ball to make it 7-6.

The Gamecocks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on RBI base knocks by Cheek and Courtemanche and in the top of the sixth, the Beavers got two on with two outs before Cheek induced a fly ball to right field to end the game and the sweep was complete for the Gamecocks.
