The Shelbyville Central Eaglettes were hoping to avenge a Senior Night home loss inflicted by the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (13-11) two weeks ago when they rolled into Frog Bottom on Tuesday night for a non-district game.

The Eaglettes used an eight-run seventh inning featuring Kaydence Rippy’s grand slam home run to overtake the Lady Bulldogs for a 10-6 victory.

The Lady Dawgs led 6-2 entering the top of the seventh before Shelbyville rallied off Cornersville pitcher Carmen Ward, who had sailed through the Eaglettes’ batting order for six innings.

The loss stung even more due to the injury suffered by Cornersville’s Alicia Polk, who was hurt sliding in to second base after slamming a two-run RBI double in the first inning.

Polk was able to walk off the field as the Cornersville faithful held their breath and now must wait for medical results to see if their shortstop can resume her stellar season.

Cornersville coach Nathan Polk, although concerned with Polk’s injury, was upbeat after the game, saying, “They hit the ball, we didn’t make bunch of errors, you just have to congratulate them. We went to their place and won. Sometimes it happens.”

The evening started well for the Lady Bulldogs in the bottom of the first inning as Anna Wood was hit by a pitch and Polk reached on an error.

Another Eaglettes’ error allowed Jayli Childress to reach base, but Wood was cut down trying for third base when the ball fell for an error.

Molly Wells, who went 3-for-3 on the night, laced a single to load the bases before a third Shelbyville error allowed Polk to score on a hard hit ball to third base by Aleia Childress.

The bottom of the second inning saw the Lady Bulldogs pad their lead as Cora Duke got aboard when the Eaglettes’ first baseman came off the bag stretching for the throw from shortstop.

Alisha Price singled on a bunt to put two Cornersville runners on with no outs.

Wood advanced the runners to the right side and Polk delivered a drive to the fence in left/center field to score Duke and Price to make the score 3-0, but time was called as Polk lay on the ground in pain.

Ward cruised through the top of the third inning before Cornersville struck again in the bottom of the inning.

Wells singled to lead off and moved to third on Aleia Childress’ double before scoring on a fielder’s choice RBI by Abbie Woodard to it 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cornersville seemed to be in control as they extended the lead to 6-0 on a Wood RBI single.

Shelbyville began to creep back into the game as Jaleigha Harris led off the top of the fifth inning with a booming triple to centerfield before scoring on a Kate McKamey RBI single.

The Eaglettes crept closer with another run in the top of the sixth inning as back-to-back Lady Bulldog errors put Rippy and Brown on for Shelbyville and a fielder’s choice allowed Rippy to score.

The Lady Dawgs did not score in the bottom of the sixth inning and then came the top of the seventh when the bottom fell out for Cornersville.

McKamey and Shavers led off with back-to-back singles and after an out, Hannah Burks walked to load the bases.

On the next pitch, Rippy sent a high fly ball to left field that landed over the fence for a grand slam home run that tied ball game at 6-6.

Brown singled to keep the rally going as Cornersville changed pitchers, bringing in Jayli Childress to face Elvie Winfrey.

Childress retired Winfrey for the second out, but consecutive singles by Dejah Lineberger, Harris, and McKamey plated two runs as Shelbyville took the lead for the first time at 8-6.

Shavers then cleared the bases with a double to left field and at the end of inning, Shelbyville led 10-6.

The Cornersville faithful where hopeful as Aleia Childress doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.

Hannah Burks, the new Shelbyville pitcher, dashed the Lady Bulldogs hopes as she retired Woodard on a strike out, Cora Duke on a line out to shortstop, and Price on a grounder to third base and the Eaglettes had their revenge.

The seniors on the team recognize they will need to step up and lead after Polk’s injury as Abbie Woodard said, “The seniors will have to step up and show the team that things will be alright.”

The Lady Bulldogs play Culleoka for Senior Night on Thursday and the last district game is at 2:00 p.m. Saturday against Cascade.

Next week brings games with Richland and Giles County before the District 8-A Tournament begins at Cascade on the May 6.
