Rockets beat Tigers in middle school showdown

The LMS Tigers travelled to Chapel Hill Friday night for the first of two intra-county rivalry contests this season and it was the Rockets who came out on top 7-3.

FMS only had four hits in the game and got some first inning help by the Tigers, who spotted FMS four unearned runs without a base hit.

The Tigers had eight hits in the game with Lucas Hery, Eli Cross, and Jaxon Rogers all coming up with a pair of hits while Kel Hightower and Carson Henderson had one safety apiece.

Jake McDaniel, Tyler Baxter, Kason Fuller, and Branham Haynes all had one hit apiece for the Rockets.

Luke Allen picked up the win on the hill for FMS, tossing the first three innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out two LMS batters.

Ethan Osborne got the hold as he pitched two innings and gave up one run on three hits and Reid Gentry finished up the job on the hill as he picked up the save with two innings of no-hit ball.

Aydan Cook had a mixed bag on the mound for the Tigers as he got off to a rough start, but the lefty settled in and tossed five innings before being relieved by Carson Henderson after Cook walked the first two Forrest batters in the sixth inning.

LMS came up with a back-to-back one hits in the first inning by Hightower and Cross before a line drive double play ended the threat.

Cook walked FMS leadoff hitter Reid Gentry and then beaned McDaniel before an infield error loaded the bases.

Fuller got the Rockets on the board with a sacrifice fly RBI and then disaster struck as three runs crossed the plate on two more errors and a wild pitch to give FMS a 4-0 lead.

LMS got its first two batters on base in the top of the second inning before Allen retired the next three Tiger batters in row, including a pair of strikeouts.

Cook set down FMS 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and the Tigers plated two runs in the top of the third inning as Hery singled to lead off the frame and came around to score after stealing second, going to third on a passed ball, and touching home on a wild pitch.

Cross banged a one-out base hit, went to third on a wild pickoff attempt, and made it 4-2 when he scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Reid Mitchell.

Cook was strong on the hill in the bottom of the third and Tigers threatened again in the top of the fourth inning as they had the bases loaded with one down against Osborne when another line drive double play spoiled the scoring opportunity.

Cook escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the inning and the Tigers made it a one-run game when Mitchell was hit by a pitch with one down, stole second, and went to third on a base hit before scoring on a wild pickoff throw to first base, making it 4-3.

Baxter led off the home half of the stanza with stand-up triple to center field before LMS manager Beau Hardison elected to load the bases with back-to-back intentional walks to Fuller and Allen.

Baxter came home on a wild pitch and Fuller scored on a base hit to center field by Haynes to make it 6-3, but that was all the Rockets would get as LMS came up with wild double play to limit the damage.

Gentry owned the top of the sixth inning as he had an infield assist on all three ground ball outs to the mound and the Rockets added another insurance run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI base hit by Fuller to make it 7-3.

The Tigers did not go down easy as they had two-on with two outs before Gentry induced the game-ending pop-out to Baxter at shortstop.

The two teams will meet again on April 9 at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field in Lewisburg.
